(May 9, 2003) -- There isn't one simple explanation for the St. Louis Rams' fall from a Super Bowl team in 2001 to a 7-9 disappointment a year later.

Injuries -- especially to quarterback Kurt Warner -- played a large role. So did inferior play on the offensive line, a lack of production from the No. 3 receiver spot, a big slide in defensive performance, and a league-worst minus-19 in turnover differential. Those were just some of the, shall we say, lowlights.

Coach Mike Martz understands that Warner's return to good health, which is fully expected, and repairs/upgrades within the roster will go a long way toward determining whether the Rams bounce back to being a contender or continue to struggle.

But he also sees the need for much more fundamental improvement, something he felt the Rams got away from after their loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI .

"We have to go back and start from ground zero and make no assumptions about anything or anybody," Martz said. "Start with the very details of how to break out of the huddle, how to get in our stance, and everything else. We have to start all over."
