IRVING, Texas - After more than 40 years of calling NFL games, longtime play-by-play announcer Pat Summerall is leaving the booth.

Summerall informed Fox Sports Thursday he will not return next season after a deal allowing him to work only Cowboys games this fall could not be reached.

"It was hard to make that decision," Summerall said. "I'll miss it, but it's time."

Summerall, who turns 73 Saturday, worked 10 Cowboys games last season and wanted to do all 12 Cowboys this fall, and then have four weeks off when the Cowboys games were televised on another network or Fox happened to use it's No. 1 crew for their games.

Up until last season, Summerall was part of the No. 1 team, working with John Madden for eight years at Fox, and another 13 years together at CBS.

Summerall, who lives less than 20 minutes from Texas Stadium in Southlake, Texas, is a close friend of both Jerry Jones and Bill Parcells. He said there is a possibility he could work for the team's Silver Star Network, which will televise three preseason games this summer in the four-state area. Summerall also hinted at the possibility of being the host of Parcells' weekly TV show produced by the club.
