View Full Version : Some numbers on the Sabres Penalty Kill

A part of the team that has been struggling lately.

Overall they are 8th in the NHL, having allowed 39 goals out of 235 attempts (83.4% success rate)

Since Gaustad went out they have allowed 8 goals out of 20 attempts (60% success rate)

Since Tallinder went out, they have allowed 13 goals out of 43 attempts (69.8% success rate)

Here is to those two returning soon.

(Note: I am fully aware that there are other factors and that both of these players missed games earlier in the season.)

Although I agree those players will help, them coming back does not address the deficiences this team has that we've talked about for the past three years. Until this organization decides to focus on winning the cup, I just don't see this team being much better then what they are now. I'm hoping Darcy learns from other successful teams and obtains the key ingredients at the deadline that could make this team a legit contender.

This is the epitome of what I'm talking about when I say you beat us over the head with the same negative statement all the time.

They aren't going to get much better than they are now? Seriously?

Was our PK and PP last season as good as this years? I think this team has progressed since last season. Meaning they have IMPROVED. Which is something that can't be overlooked.

We were on the outside looking in last season. We are now in the mix. This team is improving with young players. I can't see how you can deny it.

Idiotic post. So what you're saying is that I'm never allowed to state the truth on this board? Ok, whatever...

Do you ever read my other posts??? I'm sure most on here will agree that I've been more then fair lately. However, being fair doesn't mean that I don't have the right to state the problems with this team.

The thread wasn't even about anything but the penalty kill and you went off on your same old spiel. Sure, you've made other decent posts too, but you always come back to this.

You talk about me, but YOU constantly bring up the same crap about my posts! You are guilty of the exact same thing. Funny, but I'm pretty sure I have been pretty fair this season and especially lately. However, you have to always go back and say I'm repeating myself when you don't agree with my points. Well, you continue to repeat yourself over and over and over. You truly need to get over yourself.

Hydro...stay out of it. That's not the point of the thread, so please understand what's going on before you post. This team hasn't been good enough, they've effectively gone with the same team for more then 4 years and they are not getting better. They still are inconsistent, they still lack character, they still lack size, they still lack championship winning players to bring experience, they still have Max, Hecht, etc on this roster. This post was about this FO not making an effort to be a champion. There is no way anybody can tell me they believe this organization has made a serious effort at becoming a champion.

I agree with much of what you have to say, and I've told you that more than once. The issue I have is how much you repeat it.

Wow, you must really have a crush on me to waste that much time. You are now scaring me!The funny part is, it didn't take long at all. Out of your last 500 posts, which is as far back as I can go, about 400 of them are you *****ing about the same few things in regards to either the Sabres or the Bills, so I just focused on the Sabres ones. Took me about 15 minutes to compile that list.

If you think I write the same thing over and over, then you don't read everything I post. I'm not going to argue with you about this, I do not write the same thing over and over. There are MANY posts where I have been fair, positive and haven't repeated myself. Just because certain subjects will produce the same response from me (because that's how I feel and I'm not going to flip flop) doesn't mean that every one of my posts is negative. To say that is plain ignorant and false. You and a certain few on here always jump on this when you find one of my negative posts, but I hear NOTHING when my post isn't negative. Seriously, you guys are off base.

Anyhow, back to the topic of the thread, the Penalty kill:

http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/sabresnhl/story/585801.html

Derek Roy feels it every game now. It’s a repeated ding to his pride, a short, sharp punch to his psyche.

Roy’s problem is power-play goals. The Buffalo Sabres are simply giving up too many. They’ve given up at least one in seven straight games, easily their longest slump of the season as they head into tonight’s game against the New York Rangers in HSBC Arena.
It’s really bugging Roy. “It does,” the center said Friday. “We were top two, three in the league, and then we dropped. I don’t even know where we are right now. We’re getting scored every game on it.

“[I] take a lot of pride in penalty killing. I think everybody on this team should. Everybody should take a lot of pride in working hard and not letting in goals short-handed.”
As Roy said, the Sabres have indeed dropped in the penalty-kill rankings. When Montreal came to town Feb. 6, the Sabres were third in the NHL with an 85.6 percent kill rate. The Canadiens went 1 for 3 to start the opponents’ run, and it’s gotten progressively worse.

The Sabres have killed just 13 of the past 22 short-handed situations, a paltry 59.1 percent. Entering Friday night’s games, Buffalo was down to seventh in the league at 83.1 percent on the season.
