In a little more than 48 hours, the Baltimore Ravens laid the cornerstone for the next eight months.
During the team’s first minicamp of the season, which ran from Friday morning until Sunday afternoon, the Ravens had team and positional meetings, distributed playbooks and practiced four times, despite the nearly-constant threat of thunderstorms.
Perhaps most importantly, the Ravens’ 16 rookies and six free agent additions met their new teammates for the first time.
“Just knowing the guys on this team brings a comfort level,” said Kyle Boller, the fire-throwing quarterback Baltimore drafted in the first round last month. “You can go over film and talk with the coaches for hours and hours, but before you get out there and actually do it, you don’t really understand it. Now, I think things will get a lot better.”
According to head coach Brian Billick, things went rather pretty darn well the first time around.
Much of the focus this season will be on Boller and Chris Redman, the two quarterbacks that will vie to be the team’s starter this fall.
