CHICAGO -- New Bears quarterback Kordell Stewart received the prestigious Gift of Hope Award from the Illinois Chapter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) during the organization's 12th Annual Gift of Hope Gala Saturday at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago.

The theme of this year's black tie event, which is the group's largest fundraising function of the year, was "Honoring and celebrating the courage of our youngest members."

According to Gala chair Greg Greenberg, Stewart was honored in recognition of his "leadership skills, dedication, community service and commitment to helping young people."

Stewart joined the Bears last month after eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. An agile, versatile and quick signal caller with a strong and accurate arm, Stewart has passed for 70 touchdowns and rushed for another 35 in his NFL career.

Nicknamed "Slash" by head coach Bill Cowher when he played quarterback, wide receiver and running back as a rookie in 1995, he set the NFL record for the longest TD run by a quarterback (80 yards) as a Steeler.

As a member of the NFL Quarterback Club, Stewart has been heavily involved in activities that support the group's official charity, the Children's Miracle Network.

The CCFA was founded in 1967 and is the only national non-profit, research-oriented, voluntary health organization dedicated to finding a cure for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Its mission is to cure and prevent these afflictions thorough research and to improve the quality of life of the estimated one million Americans-200,000 of whom are children-troubled by these digestive diseases.

In addition to focusing on research dollars, the CCFA's Illinois Chapter also conducts volunteer-run services including support groups, physician referrals, free medical information, educational conferences and Camp Odyssey, a summer camp for children with IBD.
