NHL commissioner Gary Bettman continues trying to allay concerns over the league's finances as the global recession deepens, but recent media reports suggest things could get grim over the next couple of seasons.
The Philadelphia Flyers have over $42 million committed to 12 players for that season. Four of them — Daniel Briere, Simon Gagne, Scott Hartnell and Kimmo Timonen — have either "no-trade" or "no-movement" clauses and their combined cap hit for 2010-11 is over $20 million.
The defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings have over $34 million currently committed to nine players for 2010-11, and are reportedly trying to re-sign pending unrestricted free-agent forwards Marian Hossa and Johan Franzen.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have over $38 million committed to nine players, with nearly $34 million tied up in Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Marc-Andre Fleury, Ryan Whitney and Brooks Orpik.
The Calgary Flames have almost $36 million for nine players, with most of that paid to Jarome Iglina, Daymond Langkow, Dion Phaneuf, Robyn Regehr, Cory Sarich and Miikka Kiprusoff.
Another Western Canadian team with over $36 million currently committed to 2010-11 is the Edmonton Oilers, with nearly $29 million of that going to Dustin Penner, Ales Hemsky, Shawn Horcoff, Lubomir Visnovksy, Sheldon Souray and Tom Gilbert.
The Ottawa Senators currently have over $30 million committed for the '10-'11 campaign, with most of that locked up in expensive contracts for Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson, Mike Fisher and Chris Phillip, all of whom will have trade or movement clauses in place by then.
