THE RAVENS are excited about the return of inside linebacker Ray Lewis and have high hopes for first-round draft picks Terrell Suggs and Kyle Boller, but if you really want to see smiles from the coaching and front office staffs, just start talking about the secondary.
The most maligned unit in the team's seven-year history in Baltimore could eventually become one of the best in the NFL. It's hard to believe. For years, we have become accustomed to seeing the backsides of Ravens cornerbacks running down opposing receivers, especially fan favorite "Third and Long" DeRon Jenkins.
Last year it was different, but still with similar results. The Ravens played conservatively and refused to give up the long ball, but they got roughed up on the short and intermediate passes. The team finished No. 26 in pass defense.
But with an added year of experience, the addition of free agents such as Corey Fuller and Tom Knight, and hopefully a more mature Chris McAlister, the Ravens might be on to something....
