(May 10, 2003) — The Minnesota Wild should be a source of hope and motivation for the Buffalo Sabres and every other struggling NHL team.

If the Wild could make the Western Conference finals in only its third year of existence, why can’t the Sabres rapidly return to playoff contention?

Minnesota’s record last season was 26-35-12-9 for 73 points and it was outscored 236-195 (minus-41 goal differential).

The Sabres were 27-37-10-8 for 72 points and were outscored 219-190 (minus-29 goal differential) this season.

A key for next season’s Sabres (along with drafting an instant-impact first-round draft pick for a change and adding a few goal scorers via trade or free agency) will be how close they can come to emulating Minnesota’s work ethic and team chemistry
