REPORTS: BRONCOS ENTERTAINED TRADING CUTLER
Posted by Mike Florio: Saturday, February 28, 2009 4:22 PM

Adam Schefter of NFL Network and Vic Lombardi of CBS4 in Denver report that the Broncos have been shopping quarterback Jay Cutler.

Per both reports, the Bucs and Broncos were trying to swing a three-way deal pursuant to which Matt Cassel would have been traded from the Pats to the Broncos, Cutler would have gone from Denver to Tampa, and the Patriots would have been compensated presumably by the Buccaneers.
According to Schefter, the Lions also approached the Broncos about a trade for Cutler.

And here's where it gets interesting. Schefter's version creates the impression that the Broncos didn't initiate the talks, and merely responded to the offers presented. Vic Lombardi's version suggests that the Broncos were and are shopping the eleventh overall pick in the 2006 draft.

"I've heard the rumors," Cutler told Vic Lombardi. "I know what they're trying to do. Even though I love Denver and I'd love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works. If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it."

Despite Cutler's generally P.C. comments, Schefter contends that Cutler was angered by the news.

There's a consensus in league circles that Cutler has plateaued after showing some improvement early in the 2008 season. He has been criticized in some circles for having a nonchalant demeanor.

The reality is that, whenever there's a new coach, there's a chance that he'll want to pick his own quarterback. Regardless of whether the Broncos initiated the trade talks, the fact that the Broncos said anything other than "hell no" suggests that new coach Josh McDaniels wants to go in a different direction.

Interesting.

I have said before that Cutler is a talent, but I am not sure he has the head/attitude to be a top notch QB.

CBS4 (Denver) has also learned tight end Tony Scheffler has also been mentioned in trade talks.

I would LOVE Cutler in Buffalo but it would never happen.

True, great talent...a little unstable in the noggin.

He would be an upgrade and could not cost that much. The Bills should at least ask.

I would so easily give our 2nd. rounder for him...If he came here we possibly would have the best QB situation in the league. This is our chance to make the past right!

He definitely has the arm for this place.

CBS4's Gary Miller spoke with Broncos GM Brian Xanders Saturday afternoon. Xanders denied any plans to trade Cutler, saying "We are not trying to trade Jay Cutler. We will not trade Jay Cutler. He's a Pro Bowl Quarterback." He went on to say, "you can ask Josh McDaniels, and he'll tell you the same thing." Miller did approach McDaniels, who said he was not going to answer any questions. However, Cutler confirmed to CBS4 that he is aware that trade talks have taken place.

I'd be interested in trading for Scheffler if the price is right

I would have to believe he would not cost more then a 3rd or 4th to acquire. I guess it all depends on if this organization likes him or not.

I'm not gonna lie. I have a terrible feeling we will regret this come next offseason. I pray i am wrong.

If thats what the asking price is it sounds more than reasonable to me, i think we should defiantly entertain that offer

I'm pretty sure it's been said that Denver has been listening to trade possibilities, but have not been actively initiating talks.

Most likely.

But they're obviously not dismissing the possibility and are listening.

If this organization has any commitment to the fanbase, at all, they will get in on these talks.

I am a big Trent Edwards guy, but you can't discount Cutlers abilities.

I'm not sure what the knocks are on him in regards to his attitude. He seems fiery, he makes some bad choices, but seems to rebound from them nicely.

New Denver coach McDaniels was Cassel's mentor in NE. It's obvious that Denver would want to get McDaniel's guy. It didn't happen. Now, Cutler could still be moved to the Jets or something, but that has nothing to do w/ us. BTW, Edwards outplayed Cutler, in the snow, in December, in Denver. Edwards brought the Bills back in the 4th qtr on a great pass to Freddy J. Cutler had 2 later drives to win, blew 'em both. Give me Edwards. Fire away!...

It should just say "Cutler". Cutler is the 11th pick they speak of. I know this because we already have the 11th pick.

I'd give a third for Scheffler! He would fill our need at TE very nicely!
