Free agency is no sign of the times

Not directly Bills related, but a good read nonetheless.

So much for the country’s sinking economy affecting the spending habits of some NFL teams.

In Washington, Redskins owner Daniel Snyder provided his own stimulus package by shelling out more than $180 million in contracts to three players.
It would figure that Snyder would be undeterred by the national financial crisis. Last Friday, he opened free agency with a bang by retaining cornerback DeAngelo Hall with a six-year, $54 million contract that includes $22.5 million in guaranteed money.

Snyder was just getting started. Four hours later, he landed the jewel of the free agents, Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, with a seven-year, $100 million deal that features a record $41 million in guarantees. And for good measure, Snyder gave Derrick Dockery a five-year, $26.5 contract with $8 million guaranteed a day after the left guard was released by the Buffalo Bills.

Why would the economy affect NFL spending. The NFL is essentially a closed economy that operates in its own atmosphere.
