QB wasn't glamorous for Woodley
It was the spring of 1983, and the Miami Dolphins were minicamping at Biscayne College. On the field, quarterbacks David Woodley and Don Strock warmed up their arms while coach Don Shula talked to reporters.
Just months earlier, Woodley, an eighth-round draft choice out of LSU in 1980, had taken the Dolphins to Super Bowl XVII before stinking up Pasadena in a 27-17 loss to John Riggins and the Washington Redskins. Strock was a smart veteran from Virginia Tech who could have started for many NFL teams. The Dolphins' quarterbacking seemed every bit as set as Shula's famously jutting jaw whenever something or somebody raised his ire.
Off to the side, a tall, curly haired rookie from Pitt began limbering up his arm. Dan Marino had been a real hotshot as a junior, but he dropped off somewhat his senior season with the Panthers. Five quarterbacks (John Elway, Todd Blackledge, Jim Kelly, Tony Eason, Ken O'Brien) were drafted ahead of him in the first round.
