Free agent defensive end Peppi Zellner agreed to a one-year, minimum-salary contract with the Washington Redskins yesterday.

Zellner, 28, spent the last four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He likely will back up Renaldo Wynn at one defensive end spot while Regan Upshaw and Bruce Smith share playing time at the other end. Zellner played for Redskins defensive line coach Robert Nunn in junior college and played in Dallas while Redskins defensive coordinator George Edwards was the Cowboys' linebackers coach.

"He felt comfortable with it, and the Redskins did a good job of selling the opportunity," said Frank Murtha, one of Zellner's representatives.

Zellner's deal includes a $25,000 bonus and will pay him the minimum salary of $530,000. He also was in contact with the Cincinnati Bengals. He twice postponed a visit to Cincinnati last week, and Redskins officials were growing impatient. They planned to bring in free agent defensive lineman Bernard Whittington, who spent the past two seasons with the Bengals after seven seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, for a workout on Wednesday at Redskins Park, but cancelled that visit when Zellner agreed to his deal late in the day
