BROWNS: LB Miller to retire because of slow recovery

CLEVELAND (May 12, 2003 7:31 p.m. EDT) - Former Cleveland Browns linebacker Jamir Miller has been advised to retire by a doctor who examined the free agent's surgically repaired Achilles' tendon.

"He got a very discouraging medical report," Miller's agent, Leigh Steinberg, said Monday. "The Achilles' injury is very serious. He's seriously considering retirement and is in the last stages of making a decision."

Miller, who made the Pro Bowl after recording 13 sacks in 2001, ruptured his right Achilles' tendon in the Browns' exhibition opener against Minnesota last August and missed the entire season.

Steinberg said Miller had been bothered by soreness in his heel the past few weeks, and he visited a specialist in Los Angeles on Friday....

Linebacker Jamir Miller will announce his retirement from football as early as today, a source said yesterday.

Miller, 29, will make the announcement in a conference call with local media in the next day or two, the source said.

Miller, reached yesterday at his home in Arizona, would not confirm his retirement, but said, "let's just say my rehab is going very slowly."

Miller's agent, Leigh Steinberg, said yesterday that Miller visited a doctor in Los Angeles on Thursday and received a very discouraging medical report about his Achilles' tendon, which had been "killing him" again in the past month. Miller tore the tendon in a preseason game last year and had it surgically repaired.

"This is pushing Jamir in the direction of feeling like he can no longer play," Steinberg said

The Browns did the right thing by cutting ties with Jamir Miller on Thursday.

Not, mind you, because he's not a good player or doesn't have something to offer the 2003 Cleveland Browns.

It simply was time.

Leigh Steinberg said his client's quibble with the Browns was the pass-rush role he was going to play. Fair enough -- and probably true because Miller is a proud man, and he does not see himself as a situational player.

But the fact remains that the Browns made a sincere effort to re-sign a player they easily could have waved goodbye to two months ago.

Carmen Policy himself handled all negotiations as the team tried to bring Miller back. Butch Davis -- no fan of Miller's off-season work habits prior to the 2002 season -- told Miller face to face he wanted him back. When Steinberg and Miller didn't give the team an answer, the Browns kept making contact with Steinberg to let Miller know they wanted him.

CLEVELAND (May 15, 2003 4:25 p.m. EDT) - Former Browns linebacker Jamir Miller announced his retirement Thursday because of an injury that wouldn't heal or allow him to play like a Pro Bowler.

The 29-year-old Miller missed all of last season after tearing his Achilles' tendon in an exhibition game. Despite months of grueling rehab, Miller said his injury wasn't getting better and, on the advice of doctors, he decided to end his nine-year career.

"I was unable to cut or do certain things that I wanted to do," Miller said. "That's it."
