Jets' top pick ready to talk contract

Hadley Engelhard has a line to describe the unusual attributes of his client, Jets' defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson: "Let's just say Dewayne's a freak."

Soon we'll hear about this year's price for freakiness. Engelhard and the Jets should begin negotiations in a few days on a contract for Robertson, the fourth overall pick of last month's draft who showed his rare combination of size (6-foot-1, 320 pounds) and speed (4.85 seconds in the 40) at the recent minicamp.

"We've had conversations about having conversations, so to speak," Engelhard said Monday. "We hope to begin talking at some length this week."

Engelhard said he and his Atlanta-based agency, So So Def Sports Management, did their research on No. 4 picks when it thought that Robertson would be drafted by Chicago, which had the pick until trading it to the Jets the day before the draft.

The Jets, led by assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum and salary cap analyst Dawn Aponte, also have done their research. Negotiations could be complex, but Engelhard is hopeful they could conclude as quickly as last year's talks with first-rounder Bryan Thomas' agent, which produced an agreement June 15.

Neither side is discussing contract parameters, but offensive tackle Mike Williams, taken fourth by Buffalo last season, signed a six-year, $16.83 million deal that included a $7.5 million signing bonus
