    2009 NFL schedule question.

Tradionally, does the NFL season begin the first or second Sunday of September?

This year the first Sunday is Sept 6th, followed by Sept 13th.

The 13th is late for the season to start, so I would suspect it will begin Sept 6.

Sound right? I really cant remember right now.

Naw, I read about this. It's starting the first weekend AFTER Labor day. Since Labor Day is on the 7th (the latest it can be) the Season won't start until the 13th.

Plus, we play the HOF game on August 9th. Meaning, the first weekend of the preseason would start Thursday the 13th. Week 2, the 20th, week 3 the 27th and week four of the preseaon would start on September 3rd. Meaning that Sunday September 6th would still be the final preseaon weekend.

Opening weekend will start Thursday September 10th. As late as it can start.

Yeah- the NFL has it's reasons not to open on Labor day weekend- mainly TV ratings. They want big audiences for the Thursday night opener and Sunday games. They don't get that when everyone is out on family picnics and the last summer vacation.

It also pushes the Super Bowl into February- a ratings sweeps month.
