Culpepper deal smarter than it seems

Being a former car salesman, Red McCombs knows something about being slick. And it looks like he pulled a fast one on his young quarterback, -Daunte Culpepper. Meanwhile, others wonder if his next plan is to pull up stakes and move his Vikings out of Minnesota.
A few months ago, McCombs told Minnesota writers that he might force Culpepper into playing out his final contractual season without a new deal. He fooled everyone.

But the 10-year extension for $102 million that Culpepper agreed to last week only guarantees the quarterback $10 million over the next two seasons, plus only costs McCombs roughly $3.54 million in out-of-pocket revenue this season.

The deal is so back-loaded that it's ideal for, say, an owner looking to sell in the next year or two. Also, if Culpepper doesn't quit fumbling and throwing interceptions, the Vikings can cut him loose without taking a huge salary-cap hit.

Everybody "oohed and awed" Bledsoe's 100+ million deal when he signed it with the Pats 3 years ago- and it turned out to be one of the best deals in football.

This deal frees the Vikes of tons of cap space in the next few years. Plus, $16 mill of bonus spread out over 10 years is another bargain. and with only 16% of the contract guaranteed, if Culpepper flops (unlikely) he can be cut and it won't cost the Vikes an arm and a leg. It only hurts if he flops and gets cut the next 2-3 years.

6-7 years from now, a $10 million starting QB is going to be chump change.
