Does anybody understand the Arizona Cardinals?

Perhaps more importantly, does anybody really care enough about this team to even make the effort?

No and no.

With the Bengals continuing to do an excellent job of shedding their longstanding “Bungles” image — earning consistently high grades with their savvy selections in the recently concluded draft — and the Vikings at least partially improving their reputation in the eyes of many — making a genuine commitment to QB Daunte Culpepper with an extremely generous contract extension — it’s getting hard to find an NFL team that you can really pick on right about now.

Except, of course, for Bill Bidwill’s hopelessly quirky Redbirds — a team that continues to aimlessly plod along in the Valley of the Sun, destined for yet another meltdown that will further alienate their increasingly apathetic fan base.

Check out the early NFL power rankings for the upcoming season that have been popping up here and there on the Internet. Is it my imagination, or are the Cardinals stuck firmly at the No. 32 spot just about everywhere you look?

That’s what happens when you decide not to draft Terrell Suggs — a local product from nearby Arizona State who could have filled your most glaring need for a premium pass rusher and put more fannies in the stands.

That’s what happens when you instead choose to trade down in the first round and end up reaching so far for WR Bryant Johnson and DE Calvin Pace that you risk suffering from chronic rotator-cuff damage for the rest of your sorry existence.
