View Full Version : Vikings emerge from mini-camp with renewed optimism

(May 13, 2003 2:20 p.m. EDT) - The Minnesota Vikings' supposed rising star last season was a rookie free agent who played a position they desperately needed to fill. He was 6-3, weighed 210 pounds and looked like a prototypical safety during non-contact drills in mini-camp.

Kyries Hebert never made the Vikings roster. He was released at the end of preseason, never was offered so much as a spot on the practice squad and is now on the Houston Texans' roster.

That cautionary tale seemed to waft around Winter Park on Sunday as the Vikings completed their three-day mandatory mini-camp. Coaches and owner Red McCombs were optimistic about the team's progress but stopped short of gushing three months before the true evaluation period begins in training camp.

"I'm excited about what we've accomplished," coach Mike Tice said. "We're going in the right direction. ... Everyone that is fast and quick looks good in shorts. When we go to training camp, and we start hitting and getting sore and beat up a little bit, that's when people will start separating themselves." ...
