    League still grapples with minority hiring guidelines

    With the NFL spring meeting to be held here a little more than a week from now, there has been no decision on whether the Detroit Lions will be sanctioned for violating the league's diversity policy in the hiring of head coach Steve Mariucci.

    At the annual league meetings in March, diversity committee chairman Dan Rooney, owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, said he expected a decision to be made before the May 20 meeting. The committee can only make a recommendation, however. The decision on whether and how to punish the Lions is NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue's.

    Chances are Detroit will not be penalized or will receive only a light punishment, such as an official reprimand.
