The Giants took a hit this offseason when they lost the entire right side of their offensive line to free agency. Yesterday they took steps to make sure the left side will stay intact for years.
Rich Seubert, who burst onto the scene as the starting left guard last season, signed a four-year, $8.8 million contract extension that should keep him with the Giants through the 2007 season. The deal includes a $1.4 million signing bonus and a $1.6 million option bonus due next March.

Not bad for a player who wasn't even drafted when he left Western Illinois in 2001.

"From the day he walked on these grounds, the coaches said the same thing - they thought he was something special," Giants GM Ernie Accorsi said. "We just wanted to make sure we kept that."

Seubert, 24, will be paid base salaries of $375,000 this season and $550,000 next season, meaning the deal will have minimal impact on the Giants' salary cap. His salary jumps to $1.25 million in 2005, $1.75 million in 2006 and $2.25 million in 2007, when he'll still be just 28 years old.

The deal also includes incentives if the 6-foot-5, 305-pounder makes the Pro Bowl - incentives the Giants fully expect to pay.

May 14, 2003 -- A year ago, Rich Seubert was an undersized, un-drafted offensive lineman out of Western Illinois with two games of NFL experience. One year later, he's an established starter with the Giants. This week, the club hammered home that point by giving Seubert a four-year contract extension.
Seubert, 24, started 15 games at left guard last season and was a pleasant surprise. His extension averages $2.37 million and his signing bonus of $3 million is split, with $1.4 million paid immediately and $1.6 million as an option bonus due next March. Seubert's salary cap number increases from $394,000 to $669,466. He was due to become a restricted free agent after this season.

Three-fifths of the offensive line will return intact, with Seubert, LT Luke Petitgout and C Chris Bober set at their positions. The free agent defections of Jason Whittle and Mike Rosenthal leave two openings in the starting lineup. Ian Allen is the favorite for the RT spot and, at G, the Giants will choose among a group of players that include Tam Hopkins and rookie David Diehl. Barrett Brooks and Jeff Hatch are also in the mix.
