The Giants took a hit this offseason when they lost the entire right side of their offensive line to free agency. Yesterday they took steps to make sure the left side will stay intact for years.
Rich Seubert, who burst onto the scene as the starting left guard last season, signed a four-year, $8.8 million contract extension that should keep him with the Giants through the 2007 season. The deal includes a $1.4 million signing bonus and a $1.6 million option bonus due next March.
Not bad for a player who wasn't even drafted when he left Western Illinois in 2001.
"From the day he walked on these grounds, the coaches said the same thing - they thought he was something special," Giants GM Ernie Accorsi said. "We just wanted to make sure we kept that."
Seubert, 24, will be paid base salaries of $375,000 this season and $550,000 next season, meaning the deal will have minimal impact on the Giants' salary cap. His salary jumps to $1.25 million in 2005, $1.75 million in 2006 and $2.25 million in 2007, when he'll still be just 28 years old.
The deal also includes incentives if the 6-foot-5, 305-pounder makes the Pro Bowl - incentives the Giants fully expect to pay.
