The Baltimore Ravens wanted Byron Leftwich in the worst way, but they're not crying because they didn't get him.

The Ravens will tell you they did just fine in last month's draft, thank you very much.

The mix-up at the seventh overall pick is now well-documented. The Ravens were trying to work out a deal with Minnesota to move up from 10th to take the Marshall University quarterback when time expired and Jacksonville snatched him up.

That would leave many gritting their teeth in horror. The Ravens' brain trust simply went back to its board, the list that each team keeps to rate the players left after each pick.

"The draft is about reacting," said Ozzie Newsome, Baltimore's senior vice president of football operations. "When that didn't work, we said, 'Heck, who's the highest player on the board?' It wasn't a letdown, it was more like, keep going.

"That's no different from watching Charlie Rogers go at the second pick and saying, 'Wow, I wish we could've gotten him.' "
