Defensive tackle Luther Elliss, an eight-year veteran who has struggled the past two seasons with an elbow injury, has agreed to take a significant salary cut to stay with the Lions.

It is believed Elliss will receive $1 million for this season, approximately 20 percent of the $4.7 million he was scheduled to make under terms of the contract he signed four years ago.

It is believed Elliss will receive $1 million for this season, approximately 20 percent of the $4.7 million he was scheduled to make under terms of the contract he signed four years ago.

Since back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons in 1999 and 2000, Elliss' production has dropped, primarily because of an elbow injury that left him playing with one healthy arm. He had only 38 tackles in 2001 and 42 in 2002.

If Elliss had not agreed to the renegotiation, the Lions might have released him on or after June 1, to minimize the hit they would have had to take on their salary cap.
