This Jet leads the AFC Far East
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - This was Marvin Jones as Jets' fans had never seen him.
Rather than being encased in full pads and his green No. 55 uniform, Jones was clad only in a white mawashi rapped around his waist and lower body.
Jones did a ceremonial knee bend as did his opponent, the similarly attired sumo wrestler Takamisakari. Then Jones made the first move to try to defeat his Japanese foe. But Takamisakari barely budged, and in seconds he had lifted Jones up by his mawashi, carried him a short distance, and deposited him gently outside the ring.
"One bout, one loss,'' Jones said at the Jets' training complex Thursday. "The guy was an animal. He wasn't big, but he had this big callus on his shoulder. They have this wooden pole in the ground in the corner, and they run at it and smack into it. I tapped it and it was solid. I said, 'You guys are crazy.' ''
Jones wasn't recalling a dream sequence after consuming tainted sushi, nor was he testing out a career change. Actually, the middle linebacker headlined a Jets contingent that visited Japan last week, and he's just the player to lead his teammates back in July for the American Bowl preseason opener against Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay.
