    Sabres Sign Brennan, Schiestel

Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have signed defensemen T.J. Brennan and Drew Schiestel to three-year entry level contracts that will begin in the 2009-10 season. Brennan (31st overall) and Schiestel (59th) were Buffalo’s first two selections in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Brennan (4/3/1989, 6’0”, 205 lbs., shoots left) played three seasons in the QMJHL with the St. John’s/Montreal franchise, finishing with 116 points (37+79) and 234 PIMs in 192 games.

Schiestel (3/9/1989, 6’2”, 193 lbs., shoots left) is coming off a career year that saw him amass 48 points (10+38) in 63 games with the OHL’s Niagara IceDogs. He also had eight points (2+6) in 12 games during the 2009 OHL Playoffs.

They clearly were going to be signed having completing their junior years.

Schiestel was considered a reach but has really stepped up.

I think they will spend all of the season at the Pirates with maybe a brief look at the Sabres, but considering that Butler and Weber are likely to spend all the season at the Sabres, we haven't really added to the teams depth here.

I like both. Brennan needs to shore up his defensive one on one skills, he hasn't played hockey for that long (late starter), but I think he will be pretty good.

I like Scheistel, but I dont like him as much as Butler and Brennan. I think he is a 5th-6th defenseman in the NHL, but a decent asset that could grow into more.

Both will be in Rochester next year unless we totally clean house.
