View Full Version : Bills (and NFL) news and rumors I've gathered over the last few days

Admittedly, I don't believe a lot of what I read or hear during this week leading up to the draft. Teams - more than ever before - say a lot of stuff they want out there to throw other teams off, as well as help in negotiations with agents.

But I've tried to keep my ears open and did make calls to people I know both connected to organizations and in the media around the country.

And here's some of the stuff I got that I trust. I'll keep updating as I gather new info over the next 48 hours:

I've been hearing how enamored KC is with Tyson Jackson. If they can find a dance partner, I wouldn't be surprised to hear a trade announced when it's time for #3. Unfortunately for us, the new team will probably be selecting Curry.

Curry is qa real long shot. I think Smith is entirely possible though I wouldn't know what odds to lay on it.

Hm that's interesting if they actually want Smith like it sounds like they do.

I just have a hard time believing the Tyson Jackson rumors that he's flying up draft boards this week. If a guy moves up draft boards shortly after the combine, then I can understand. But the week before the draft? What's changed?

He was a senior, so it's not like they didn't expect him to declare for the draft. He was a mid-first rounder until just this week? Either somehow teams are leaking their true feelings about him just recently or it's all a smokescreen. I just have to believe the latter. He may go to Green Bay at #9, considering Ted Thompson likes to shock people, but no way he goes #3. Too many better players (Raji, Curry) in front of him.

Smith has Mike Williams written all over him. He shows up at the combine and admits he hadn't been working out and wasn't in shape... and then just leaves? This is the biggest job interview of your football career and you blow it off?

If the Bills pick him I will puke.

No way Curry is there at #11. But if Raji is there, he must be the pick.

absolutely not Commish. You are not alone. Before i even knew the Bills could potentially be interested, just based on his combine behavior, i agree, i was thinking about mike williams (texas, not usc) i pray that this does not happen, but if it does, who knows? he could surprise people positively.

If the Jets came in and offer you #17 and Round1 next year for Sanchez, would you take it?

Especially if the way the draft was unfolding someone like Everette Brown would be there at #17? It wouldn't disrupt our board but would sure provide some ammunition for the 2010 draft too.

I would seriously entertain trading #28 to the Cowboys for their #51 and a R1 next year.

We could still grab a WLB at 51 like Sintim or Freeman if they are around and then have a load of ammunition to move around in next years draft too.

Not that I think it would be bad for us, but the potential of it being great for them is too strong. What if Sanchez is the next Brady? The last thing we need is a ANOTHER bigtime QB in our div.

I don't think trading down is a philosophy this management should be going with.

"Its all or nothing!"

If I were in charge, I'd be doing everything I can to have the team be solid, NOW. Being good attracts free agents. I have good faith in our ability to manage the cap.

But trading up is more like it. They should try to get 3 firsts. Either move down from 11 for 2 first or package our 2nd and several others with Roscoe and Kelsay or something for another first. Lets get 3 studs and see what happens.

curry isnt falling to 11, a team with trade up from the teens into the second half of the top 10 to get him if he is available after the 5th pick. but i do think if some weird way he did fall (which would go against all logic that the best player in the draft falls out of the top 10) the bills will run to the podium even if smith was still on the board as well. andre smith should not be taken at 11 by us. he is a project with talent but he is extremely lazy and not that bright. we do not have a solid guard to play next to him to help him out so he will be completely exposed. also he doesnt stay in good shape AT ALL so he really should play RT for a year to get used to the game speed and conditioning he'll need. curry or orakpo would be dream selections for me, but if they are not there and smith is gone as well (which in all reality i think it is possible all 4 tackles go in the top 10 because there is not alot of high end talent in the draft and teams would rather take a good tackle if they are stuck picking and cant trade out then take a player that shouldnt be picked before the 20th pick in any other draft) i think we should reach for matthews. all DE's expept for orakpo have concerns that outweight the 11th pick (orakpo has conrerns but the value of him at 11 outweights them) exept mattews. he is a top speical teamer and runs as fast as half the safties on our team as well as he is a non stop relentless pass rusher with a really high motor.

I agree with all of you who say there's no way Curry will be there at 11. If he is, I'm joining Lecter and doing cartwheels. I may actually run naked with joy down my street.

That being said, I'm just reporting what I was told.

When I say he's moving up the board I mean from 15-20 on some boards to top 10-12. I don't think he's moving into the top 5, but someone may like him enough to grab him, or trade up to get him, near that area.

According to Casserly, Curry drops to 11 and the Bills pass on him.

This might lead to the first ever murder charge leveled against me in my life.

I understand your point but see it likes this.

Brady came good, because he had lots of college experience, had time to carry the clipboard, plays behind a very good line, and has been surrounded by playmakers both at WR and in the running game.

Sanchez is very inexperienced comparatively but would like be thrown in. The Jets aren't very good on the line, have a faltering ground attack and no real playmakers at WR.

If we allow the Jets to remain at #17, they could be able to draft Brown who could give Edwards a hard time twice a season, Beanie Wells to give our defensive line a tough time, or a genuine playmaker at WR in Maclin. Both the latter two would definitely assist in the development of Clemens and Ratliff. By allowing them to draft Sanchez, they are not addressing an area of real weakness, but are being deprived of the opportunity to give him the supporting cast he needs.

On the other hand, we'll have acquired an extra pick to draft Owens replacement, an RT, a TE, a RB if Lynch misbehaves all helping Edwards continue to develop.

They won't pass on Curry for Oher. They might for Smith though, as there have been a number of 'reports' that they think he's the best tackle in the draft.

you are definately not the only one concerned. i am extremely leery of the pick.. the guy does have as much talent as jason smith, but his attitude is really scare. some try to play off him leaving the combine unannounced.. i dont care so much about that.. as much as the fact that he wasnt ready for the combine.. and the fact that he let his own personal agenda hurt his team in the bowl game. he got kicked off the team for signing with his agent prior to the bowl game. i just have this feeling like he hasnt taken the whole thing serious at all because he knows he is talented and in his mind, he is just like, why do i have to work or do anything well.. im that good.. it will all work out for me regardless.

that irritates me..

and his titties.. wow.. i have a real issue with him running with his man boobs out.. who does that.

i dont know. stock piling 2nd round picks is not a bad philosophy. there is always great value in the 2nd round. probably a lot more than the 1st round.

Dont want Curry. Linemen only in the first round.

A great DL can make a LB great. An average DL makes a LB average or worse.

If we already had the DL in place I would jump all over it. We dont. We need to learn from the Giants and Eagles.

I hear that and we really need to improve the lines but passing on a talent like Curry to reach for a d lineman doesn't make sense. Now if Orakpo, or Raji are on the board with him we go d line but I'd be more pissed if we take Maybin over Curry.

I would rather have a pass rush specialist with big time potential then a guy who will be asked to drop into zone coverage most of the time and make some plays in the run game.

We need to get to Brady. Curry wont do that for us. We blitz our LBs maybe 2ice a game, Maybin can greatly increase our ability to pressure Brady and thats what counts when you play the Pats and the rest of the good QBs in the league.

Curry is a much better player than Maybin and has the ability to rush the passer. Maybin also is not really that much bigger than Curry.

They do need a pass rush. But passing up on Curry for Maybin or Brown or anybody else is a huge mistake. Talent like Curry does not come along very often. Drafting solely based on need is big mistake.

The reality of that situation, is that Curry also fills a 'need', albeit a lesser one.
Curry's ability to rush the passer is, atm, something of guesswork, mainly due to him not being asked to do so when at college. He should have enough speed and power to be an effective blitzer, if he's wanted to do it. He certainly has the size.
