SAN DIEGO (May 15, 2003 10:37 a.m. EDT) - The San Diego Chargers agreed Wednesday to the city's request to extend negotiations for a new stadium by 90 days.

If approved by the City Council, the extension will begin on June 3.

"The Chargers agreed to the city's request because we want the Chargers and the Super Bowl to be part of the San Diego community for many years to come, and we want to give these negotiations every chance to succeed," Chargers attorney Mark Fabiani said.

If the sides can't agree during the new 90-day period, the Chargers would have 18 months to seek offers from other cities. San Diego would have the right to match any offer....

Frye 'tired of dealing with corporate sports'
City officials won't say much about the private talks that have gone on since March with the Chargers, not even whether the team has met the contract terms that might enable a move out of San Diego.

Tomorrow, they will ask for another three months to keep talking behind closed doors about the Chargers' demands for a new stadium.

One City Council member already says she won't support any more time for talks when both sides know enough to make decisions on the issues between the city and team.


"I just want to get this figured out and done," Councilwoman Donna Frye said. "I'm tired of dealing with corporate sports."...

After more than three months of private negotiations between the Chargers and city, the San Diego City Council will have to decide in the next several weeks whether to move forward with plans for a new stadium or sue the team.

Council members have been receiving weekly updates in closed sessions on the negotiations, including one yesterday.

Timing is becoming critical, as the council is not scheduled to meet next week and for the last three weeks of August. The deadline for ending this round of negotiations is Aug. 31. ...

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Chargers may release the team's proposal for a new stadium next week, a team official said today.

The City Council voted last night in closed session to "invite the San Diego Chargers to release to the public their stadium site redevelopment concept," Mayor Dick Murphy said in a statement.

"The City Council has taken no action on the Chargers' redevelopment concept," Murphy added. ...
