IMHO if Maybin stayed another year at PSU he would be a cinch top 5-10 pick in the 2010 draft.

What impressed me even more than how he played when PSU was winning was the way that he kept playing really hard late in the Rose Bowl when USC had a big lead and it was obvious that it was going to be a blowout: he never stopped giving it his all.

He may only be a situational pass rusher this year, but, if he can stay at about 255, he can become pretty good

I thought that, as good as he played at times, there were times when he really disappeared. With what has happened with so many Texas players who have come into the NFL with a similar profile or even better, that worried me.

He could become better than Maybin--and should be this season--but long-term he scares me. I see Maybin as a safer pick because he's a pup who is still growing and learning and he's a guy who will give it his all. (Worse comes to worse, if the Bills change coaches after this season, Maybin could switch to OLB with his quickness.)

But, with the three DEs--Maybin, Orakpo and Brown--it really does come down to a matter of preference. Now we will find out which preference will prove out under fire over the next couple of years.

That's why anyone who gets really upset at a team for selecting or not selecting a player in the draft is really overreacting. We might say that we like a player better than the guy they selected, but it is like saying "I like black 1 rather than red 22" before the ball drops. No one really knows who is going to be a hit or a miss--close to a third of 1st round picks end up being a bust and half never become stars or elite level players. So it is all very much a gamble.

It should also be kept in mind that sometimes you do play hunches, even in the draft. You shouldn't hit 17 when you play against the dealer in blackjack, but there are when you will based on a hunch or what you see on the table.

I also think that Orakpo is more of a fit in Washington's scheme than Maybin or Brown and they have been looking for a DE for the last couple of years now.

I don't think that Maybin had the techniques or size to hold up against the run at PSU last year. But, he has already put on 20 lbs and will learn. As has been pointed out, he is effectively coming out after his sophomore season, so he still has a lot of upside and learning to do.
