Word on the NFL street is that the Saints generally are in disarray, primarily because no one is firmly in charge of the front office.

Several persons have a voice. But none has the definitive control over the decision-making process and the direction of the franchise.

The primary problem, of course, is that G.M. Mickey Loomis is a cap-and-contracts guy, who must rely on others to make talent evaluations. In our view, the situation is further complicated by owner Tom Benson's rash decision to fire G.M. Randy Mueller last year.

Put simply, when a guy gets poop-canned for no apparent reason, it makes the folks who are left behind very, very nervous about doing or saying anything that could be interpreted by the boss as grounds for termination. Thus, we suspect that the employees are unwilling to be perceived as overstepping their boundaries, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, for anyone to display the kind of leadership that the organization so desperately needs.
