From WalterFootball.com:
http://walterfootball.com/college/NotreDame_logo.gif Jimmy Clausen*, Notre Dame
Height: 6-3. Weight: 217.
Projected 40 Time: 4.72.
Projected Round (2010): 2.
2/4/09: Jimmy Clausen was much more successful as a sophomore than in his troubling freshman year. Clausen threw for 3,172 yards and 25 touchdowns, and maintained a solid 7.2 YPA. However, he tossed 17 picks as well. That number must decrease.

7/24/08: In 2007, Jimmy Clausen often looked lost on the football field. This was extremely evident when he went 7-of-20 for 60 yards and two picks against Boston College on Oct. 13. However, Clausen was an 18-year-old true freshman who was coming off elbow surgery. He finished the year extremely well, tossing six touchdowns and a pick in the final three contests, albeit it was against weaker competition. Now healthy and more mature, Clausen should improve tremendously as a sophomore.

Comments:
10/03/09- vs. Washington- Very consistent thrower. Has very nice touch on his throws. Very accurate. Strong arm, very good velocity on his throws. He doesn't seem to be much of a leader. Probably wont take over games or carry the team on his back to wins. But he certainly can do his job and make game winning drives. Technically sound and can make all the throws. Good pocket presence. Good decision making, does a good job going through his progressions. Great job shaking the pressure and finding Golden Tate for a TD. Great drive with less than 2 minutes left for a score and a 2 point conversion.

10/16/09- vs. USC- Decent pocket awareness. Is patient and goes through his progressions. Even when he takes a sack, he shows he has good decision making. he wont make a lot of mistakes. Several off throws. Looks clueless in the first half. Isnt giving the game away but isnt keeping drives going either. Much better in the 3rd quarter... kept the chains moving on several drives. The running game helped free him up more. Awesome long throw to Tate for a TD. Not a smart throw considering he threw into double coverage, but he dropped it right where the WR could grab it. This is the type fo throw that Clausen will make at times and the type of leadership on the field that makes him attractive as a prospect. What we need to see is for him to do it more often. Showing emotion and getting fired up... nice to see some will to win. Another nice drive, mostly runs capped by a Clausen TD run. Drilled a great TD throw to Tate to put ND down by 7... Again shows he can lead his team to be in a position to win. So against Mich St, Purdue, Washington and now USC he keeps his team , in part, right in the game. In the final play had a poor throw to no one. But hes a gamer and hes proven it repeatedly now. In his game this year, he gives you the sense that you can believe in him.

10/24/09- vs. BC- Plays a lot in a spread offense. Poor decision in the endzone, throws the ball out while outside the box and short of the line of scrimmage... safety. In the redzone again, has all day to throw, no one in his face or even around him and throws into coverage. If the DB hadnt dropped it, it would be a INT. With time winding down inthe 2nd, mounts a very nice drive finished with a TD pass to Tate. Yet again was clutch in a close game in the 4th quarter. Brought his team to a win with chain moving drives, and smart throws.

Peckerwood's comments:

10/17/09- On the last play, had a reciever open, but one play in his senior season doesn't define his career, at least to me.

My pros for Clausen:

- Great pocket presence, knows where pressure is coming from.
- About as accurate of an arm that you could ask for.
- He has a strong enough arm to be successful with at RWS late in the year.
- Adept at audibles and making changes at the line of scrimmage.
- Tons of experience in a pro offense - HUGE.
- Really can throw the ball on the run while keeping his accuracy.
- Gamer in the 4th quarter.

He needs to continue progressing. Still, Clausen in my mind HAS to be a 1st round pick, Bradford, Tebow and McCoy don't play in a pro offense, Clausen is by far the most NFL ready.

Ingtar33's Comments:

-He has a long throwing motion, almost as long as Leftwich. It's deliberate and slow, it takes a very long time for the ball to leave his hand from the moment he makes up his mind to throw.

-He throws with a 3/4 motion. He got away with it because he's in college, the big problem for Clausen will be he's just 6'2" or so. he's not tall like Philip Rivers or Drew Bledsoe. The result is he'll have passes batted back into his face.

-He's far more comfortable throwing to his right. About 70% of his passes went to the right. The only time i saw him throw left was when the play was a designed screen to the left, or that was where his dump-off man was stationed... or he made a pre-snap read that demanded he exploit a match-up to the left. I never once saw him look left in the standard progression and throw to a 2nd or third option that way. that said, he threw a far better deep ball to the left, his deep passes to the right were largely ugly jump balls, with only a few exceptions.

-He threw most of his jump balls when he was scrambling, he threw pretty poorly on the run as a whole. Never saw him scramble left, never saw him throw on the run to the left.

-Did a great job looking off safeties

-Very accurate when he could step into his passes. probably the most accurate QB in the draft when he had a pocket

-Excellent pre-snap coverage recognition.

-Slow in his progression, locked onto the primary receiver too long

-Saw him throw only 2 or 3 slant routs. was far more comfortable throwing outs streaks or posts. Occasionally would find a 3rd option on a drag.

-About 35% of his passes were some sort of WR, TE or RB screen or dump-off pass.

1/4/10- Clausen will have toe surgery http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft10/news/story?id=4796255

Jimmy Clausen is a tough competitor who has played some of his best football in the 4th quarter with the game on the line. He has above average accuracy and can show very good leadership at times. He has good height and build but could use a bit more bulk. Clausen's arm strength is good but not great. He can make mind numbing throws at times when he just throws the ball up or try's to do too much. Peckerwood comments, “My pros for Clausen are as follows: Great pocket presence, knows where pressure is coming from. About as accurate of an arm that you could ask for. He has a strong enough arm to be successful with at RWS late in the year. Adept at audibles and making changes at the line of scrimmage. Tons of experience in a pro offense - HUGE. Really can throw the ball on the run while keeping his accuracy. Gamer in the 4th quarter...He needs to continue progressing. Still, Clausen in my mind HAS to be a 1st round pick, Bradford, Tebow and McCoy don't play in a pro offense, Clausen is by far the most NFL ready.” Ingtar33 comments, “He has a long throwing motion, almost as long as Leftwich. It's deliberate and slow, it takes a very long time for the ball to leave his hand from the moment he makes up his mind to throw… Very accurate when he could step into his passes. probably the most accurate QB in the draft when he had a pocket. Slow in his progression, locked onto the primary receiver too long.” Suffered a lingering foot injury which needed surgery this off season. He doesn't appear to have durability issues, but it may cause scouts to second guess him in that right. There's no reason to think he wont be coachable and that he couldn't become a very good player in this league. However, he is too inconsistent at this point to be fully worthy of the lofty pick he may garner. <o:p></o:p>
