He’s not a blocker.

Those were the words that Bills fourth-round pick Shawn Nelson heard time and again in his first three years at Southern Miss. A converted wide receiver, Nelson had worked hard to bring his blocking skills to a level equal to his pass catching exploits. He was able to marginally improve each year, but it wasn’t until a coaching staff change between his junior and senior year would set the table for impressive growth in Nelson’s blocking game.

Larry Fedora was named the new head coach of the Golden Eagles in January of 2008 replacing Jeff Bower, who resigned. Fedora hired Barney Farrar to be his tight ends coach, but Farrar was diagnosed with cancer a short time later. Fedora would need to find a replacement.

Wow hard not too be excited after reading that. Nelson could end up being one of the steals of the entire draft.

What is really nice about using a tight end in a receiver role is that it is so much easier to get them one on one with a safety or LB.

If we have a guy who can win the ball battle against most safeties/LB's, we are on to something here.

In other words, if his routes are designed to get him to an area without other coverage, and he can win the ball battle, he could be what we have been looking for.

I really hope they find out a way to utilize this guys skills in the passing game.... looking at videos of him on youtube... he looks like a more aggressive and explosive James Hardy.

He could definitely be the steal of the draft if he plays like he did in college and Turk finds a way to put him in the passing game.

The offense this year has the opportunity to be the most balanced attack since the 90's.

Lets hope the new oline can gel quickly.... i think that's the key to the offense this year.

I am excited about Nelson's potential. I hope he adds to the plethora of options that Trent already has available.

I still can't believe we snagged him in the 4th round. When we traded our 3rd round pick i was like there goes our chance at a good te.

Sorry, but when I saw the link for this article, as well as the pun-filled title itself, I saved myself a click.

Here's the abridged version: "Didn't think Shawn Nelson could block? Well, Buffalo, he CAN block.

He is attempting to become the most complete TE ever. He is willing to smash anyone in the face with the shoulder he's got that big chip on."

Evans is going to get open deep a lot more often this year.....even before Nelson was in the picture. If he can stretch the middle of the field, it will pay dividends.

Your not going to guard Nelson with a linebacker... that's for sure.

Either T.O. , Evans, or Nelson should be open... and I think they are all explosive.

The guy has made some outstanding receptions. I think he could really help this team a lot. Whether he has an impact in year one is yet to be determined.

we have the weapons for Edwards, but do we have the OL to protect him
