    Falcons release safety Carty

    The Falcons waived Johndale Carty on Thursday, easing a logjam at strong safety. He had a modest 38 tackles in four seasons, including 15 last fall, yet was particularly valuable on special teams, where his 10 tackles tied for second-most on the team in 2002.

    He was not likely to play more this season because the team signed unrestricted free agent Cory Hall, who is expected to start at strong safety, and former starter Gerald McBurrows is still under contract. Also, second-year pro Kevin McCadam emerged late last season and improved dramatically on special teams.
