View Full Version : DT Wendell Bryant tried out for the Bills

Not sure how many of you remember him. Apparently was a former first-rounder with talent but fell into a life of drug and alcohol abuse. He tried out with Buffalo. He's been tested extensively for 11 months and come out clean that entire time. Fairly interesting.

a few comments about this:

1. Even though he's 28, he only played 3 seasons so he probably has more longevity than the typical DT.

2. The fact that the Bills are even considering this guy shows how little faith they have in McCargo. My guess is that they would have liked to have done something about McCargo this off-season but couldn't due to the number of other needs we had.

3. Even though it seems like Bryant is working hard to get it together, I'm leery of guys with character issues, especially after all the recent incidents with this team. McCargo on the field is better than Bryant on suspension.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. I certainly don't mind them giving him a shot and bringing him into TC. Even at this point in his life, he's probably better than most UDFA's. They already tried him out so maybe they'll sign him at some point. Could be they were waiting for this past tryout weekend to be over and make decisions on who to bring into camp.

I remember him, he was considered one of the best DT's that year. Came out of Wisconsin.

I think it was the same year as Jimmy Kennedy, Ryan Pickett, and Dwayne Robertson.

That's real funny. I saw the story this morning about him on PFT so I thought he could be a good fit for the Bills as a 3 technique so I started doing some research on him.

Now this story pops up. NICE.

Guy is 6'5 298 and gets up field. Well in college anyways. Could be a great pick up playing next to Stroud.

Or maybe they are thinking he could be a diamond in the rough. Not defending McCargo but thats what tryouts are for.

Bottom line is the Bills are looking for a DT that can be more disruptive than Williams.

Having a penetrator at DT is crucial to their scheme and Williams is NOT that. Ideally I think the Bills would prefer Williams as a rotational guy.

TheMan08

He had top 5 talent, so i'd give it a little higher percentage. Plus we got nothing to lose. Look at our options, doubt it's not too hard to beat out Mccargo.

Actually, him signing here is not a sure thing. The article suggests he may have other workouts and also wouldn't mind playing in other leagues if he got a better offer.

I feel the same way about Williams. Don't get me wrong, he's been a surprise but I'd rather have him as a rotational guy.

Seems like they do this every off-season. Bring in some guy who was "once upon a time" high potential and fell out of the league for one reason or another.

Might as well sign Mike Williams while we're at it. Heard he wants to try again, too.

As usual: I'm hoping for the best, expecting something substantially less.

I wouldn't call him great. His play was decent, but he was showing signs of improvement and had that passion and emotion that this team sorely lacks. It's too bad he couldn't behave himself.

Yes, the Skins actually did that. And I've been ripping on all the Skins fans around here about it non-stop. Dockery and Mike Williams? Has anyone in the Skins' FO actually watched a Bills game where either of those two scrubs played?

Sometimes these types of players can come back and get there fix in football rather than whatever it is they were hung up on (See Brett Favre, Chris Carter, Michael Irvin). Most of the time they can't hang and drop out of society.

I'm a little concerned that he's only been in rehab since June of last year. It's a little early to determin if he's going to swing back to his own ways and the temptation will be there...everyday.

Haha I forgot you live down there. You must be having a heyday. Man, I'd love to see the practices where Williams/Dockery go up against Haynesworth. Oh dang...the Redskins have to play against the Giants' DL twice a season. Poor Jason Campbell.

You only sign a guy like this if he is better than every player at his position on your existing roster. You don't sign him because of his name, what he once was or could have become, or because he is trying to turn his life around.

Having a penetrator at DT is crucial to their scheme and Williams is NOT that. Ideally I think the Bills would prefer Williams as a rotational guy.

He showed promise as a gap penetrator, but being a rotational guy, he didn't get the snaps that he should have. If the coaching staff was worried about DT, then they would have drafted one, instead of relying on UDFA or former 1st round busts to fill a hole.

My guess is that McCargo comes back in the rotation, with Williams getting the nod as the starter. Williams is fiery, and tackles well. Does he need to improve on the strides he made last season, no doubt. I think that Fewell and Jauron feel that he can, or else they would have addressed it in the draft.

i dont see how anyone could be against this signing. the guy has a ton of abillity and practically no wear on his body, aside from still being 28.

you can sign him for next to nothing. you can cut him and lose nothing.

I never said that.

I'm never against cutting trash.

I'm always against trying to replace starters with rookies or their back-ups. The Bills LOVE to do this.

you know how sometimes you can just get a feel of if someone is full of it or not.. this guy clearly seems to have gone through his serious issues and pulled out of his own personal hell. i think giving the guy another shot is absolutely worth it. who knows.. maybe he doesnt make the team but he imparts some knowledge on mccargo that helps him see the opportunity he is wasting. maybe he plays like he should have all along and gives us a chance to replace kyle williams as a starter.

i just dont see how his signing would be in any way shape or form a negative.

If the guy proved in a workout that he still has the intangibles then we should definitely sign him to a small incentive laden deal...

the guy was a 1st rd pick, but his play suffered fro mhis adictions. The guy has been tested for a year straight and he is clean...

Bring him into training camp and if he beats out any of our DT's then he is better and we need him...

I disagree.. If he is better then 50% of our DT's on the roster you cut the low man and sign him...

if he makes the team better and he has shown he is fixing is off field life then give him the chance.

Now if he comes in and its hard to see much difference between him and our #3 / #4 DT's then you cut him...

He is very well spoken. he definately took reponsibility for all the mistakes he made and actually stated he intends on paying Arizona back for the money they gave him (7.5 million total contract) by his own choice.

Exactly. Even though I bet this is the last we hear of him, I'm happy to see that someone's paying enough attention at OBD to bring in guys like this for a look.

It gives you more confidence that, for instance, they are also aware that Levi Jones is a free agent.
