A league source tells us that the Detroit Lions are quietly looking for a replacement to Bill Tobin, the executive director of player personnel who was fired in December.

According to the source, the Lions are hoping to have someone in place soon, in the event that ownership decides to usher President/CEO Matt Millen out of the organization after the 2003 season.

Coach Steve Mariucci will have a high degree of influence as to the ultimate hire, since he'll be there beyond 2003, even if Millen isn't.

As to Millen, it's unclear whether he'll have any role in this hire -- or whether he knows that one of the goals is to have sufficient manpower on hand in the event Millen gets sent packing.
