Unless an extension of the CBA is agreed upon, next year will be uncapped. With that, the rules will change, including the fact it will take 6 years to be eligible for unrestricted FA. In that case, Merriman will be a restricted FA, and for a little less than $3M San Diego can match any offer for Merriman or receive a 1st and 3rd round pick in return.
