Martial arts help (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2009/06/martial-arts-help.html)

The Bills have a martial arts expert working with their players - particularly their defensive linemen - this week.He is Joe Kim, and he runs a tae kwon do school in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. Kim has competed at the Olympic level and worked in coaching tae kwon do athletes for 15 years at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Bills are the sixth NFL team he has worked with since 1991. New Bills defensive line coach Bob Sanders used Kim when Sanders was an assistant coach in Miami from 2001 to 2004. Then Sanders brought Kim to Green Bay the past several years. (Sanders was defensive coordinator for the Packers the past three years.)
"What I do is I try to bring my martial arts background and I try to figure out how can hand-to-hand fighting and leverage and footwork improve their pass rush or football skills," Kim said.
Kim got his start working as a consultant to NFL teams in Cleveland when Bill Belichick, then coach of the Browns, began using him. Kim spent a lof of time with the BIlls' defensive linemen in Tuesday's practice. It seems like a real good idea. Kim will be in Buffalo all this week.

Tuesday's OTA (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2009/06/tuesdays-ota.html)

The Bills ran a sharp-looking no huddle series late in Tuesday's 90-minute voluntary practice held inside Ralph Wilson Stadium. Quarterback Trent Edwards hit five crisp-looking passes on the seven-play series. Two out-routes to Lee Evans were right on time, and the drive ended with a completed slant route to Terrell Owens. Ryan Fitzpatrick took most but not all of the snaps as the second quarterback. Safety George Wilson caught a deflection-interception off Fitzpatrick in 7-on-7 work, and rookie cornerback Ellis Lankster picked off an underthrown Fitzpatrick pass on a seam route for Felton Huggins in 11-on-11 play. Rookie Aaron Maybin had a would-be sack and a pressure in the second half of the practice. Trent Edwards hit Derek Fine in perfect time on a post route in the end zone. The veteran guards, Kirk Chambers and Seth McKinney, still were running with the first teamers, ahead of rookie draft picks Erik Wood and Andy Levitre.

It's not really unusual to see rookies start off as second teamers. Especially before the pads have even been put on. The coaching staff wants to make them earn starting positions.

Organized Team Activity: Day 8

Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Posted Jun 2, 2009

The defensive unit performed admirably up front as the third week of OTAs commenced Tuesday. Buffalo’s defensive linemen were consistently getting pressure on the quarterbacks flushing them from the pocket during team work.
On the day the defensive front unofficially had four ‘would be’ sacks and three pressures as Buffalo’s quarterbacks were forced to scramble on more than a handful of occasions.
Defensive line coach Bob Sanders has been focusing a lot on hand technique with respect to pass rush with his linemen, and took it up another notch bringing in Joe Kim, a Tae Kwan Do expert that has worked with six NFL teams over the past 18 years.
“Since 1991 I’ve been working with NFL teams,” said Kim. “What I try to do is bring my martial art background and I try to figure out how the hand-to-hand fighting, the leverage and the footwork can help their pass rush skills now.”
Kim has worked with the likes of Bill Belichick, Jim Bates and Nick Saban. Sanders began working with Kim in Miami and later Green Bay, and made the short drive up from his home base of Cleveland to tutor Buffalo’s players.
“We’ve watched every sack in the NFL over the past two years this offseason and 90 percent of the sacks in the league are off counter moves,” said <nobr>Kyle Williamshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/kyle-williams/58099d36-0140-417f-9874-283bd834d7cc/)</nobr>. “So it’s really helped us to stay busy and taught us how to counter off an initial move.”
Kim affirms that the Bills players are hungry to learn his techniques, which is no surprise knowing Buffalo has ranked 29th in the league in sacks over the past two seasons. And there appeared to be an improvement just in the first practice Tuesday alone.
Taming the Wildcat
Buffalo’s defense got a respectable amount of reps in against the ‘Wildcat’ formation that Miami made so popular last season. The coaching staff realizes they’re likely to see more of it within their division and possibly elsewhere. <nobr>Donte Whitnerhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/donte-whitner/e9a05bf2-0ea7-4ef4-9882-e6e7730540b3/)</nobr> feels exposure to it in the practice setting will be important.
“We know that this is a copycat league, and we know that Miami got off to a fast start last year with the Wildcat catching some teams off guard and it got the momentum rolling for their season,” said Whitner. “Obviously they drafted Pat White and it doesn’t take to a rocket scientist to know that they’re going to use him in the Wildcat and they’re going to add a lot more wrinkles to the Wildcat. And he’s a dangerous guy, and that formation is dangerous if you don’t stop it early.
“If you continue to just let them pound away with it and get big plays and feel good with it they’ll use it the entire game and you don’t want them to do that.”
Whitner is glad the coaching staff is keeping their approach to defending the Wildcat formation fresh in the players’ minds. He feels getting reps against it once a week will help keep Buffalo’s defenders ready for it.
Sound machine
For the first time during OTAs the Bills practiced outside in Ralph Wilson Stadium. That allowed the coaching staff to take advantage of the stadium’s audio system as they blared loud music down onto the field to challenge the offense’s ability to communicate.
Overall they fared well with just one snap count issue.

Run plays were more of a focus for the offense so there were fewer opportunities for Buffalo’s receiving corps as Lee Evans and Terrell
Owens combined for five catches in the practice.
During the two minute drill portion of practice the offense needed a field goal and had one timeout at their disposal. Trent Edwards led the first unit into safe field goal range with time still left on the clock.

TKD's hand work is horrible as a direct offensive weapon but its open hand and grappling techniques come in to play when getting opponents off balance to setup up their powerful kicks.

Joe Kim teaches these techniques to better setup a DL's counter moves. As KW said, 90% of sacks in the NFL come off of counter moves.

 Sure, if your opponent doesn't mind waiting an extra few seconds and he turns a blind eye to your telegraphed move.

There are definitely better styles that come to mind but it's a supply and demand kind of deal. Plus, you can't argue with Sanders or Kim's success up to this point.

Success. We shall see soon enough. BUt I do agree that doing something and trying something is better than doing nothing. I just didn't think it would come from a martial art system that's not known for having good hand work but focuses mostly based on point kicking.

Proving that it is never too early to begin preparing for an opponent, the Bills' defense practiced some snaps against the Wildcat formation popularized by the Miami Dolphins last season. The Bills don't play the Dolphins until Oct 4, but any extra work against the scheme certainly can't hurt.

Parrish wants the ball (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2009/06/parrish-wants-the-ball.html)

My column today agrees with Roscoe Parrish's gripe about his lack of involvement in the Bills' offense. No one expects him to catch 50 balls per season, but there are ways to get him the ball in situations where his big-play ability can be used beyond punt returns. Parrish can be dangerous on screens, quick slants and other plays where he gets the ball in a hurry and can make something happen.
Despite his unhappiness, the Bills were wise not to trade Parrish. This team needs all the explosive weapons it can get, and he's a threat to score any time he touches the ball. Offensive coordinator Turk Schonert has to make sure Parrish gets enough touches to make an impact.

The receiver’s biggest play came late in practice when he got behind the secondary and <nobr>Ryan Fitzpatrickhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/ryan-fitzpatrick/d260ac2d-12f2-4322-b794-02830c8319c8/)</nobr> dropped a 40-yard pass over his shoulder for a 65-yard touchdown play.
Five plays later he capped the day with his seventh catch of the workout on a deep sideline route.
“He’s one of best slot receivers we have,” said <nobr>Trent Edwardshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/trent-edwards/26db3ddb-7753-4604-ac7f-eb78856a889a/)</nobr>. “It’s just a matter of putting him in a position to win and putting him in a position where he’s comfortable and he understands what he’s supposed to do. And that comes with practice, that comes with getting him his reps in practice, and then actually performing in the game.
“He’s one of the most exciting guys on our team, so we need to find a way to get the ball in his hands, and I’m working with Turk (Schonert), I’m working with Alex (Van Pelt) to try to come up with ways we can do that. That’s definitely a weapon we need to take advantage of.”
Highlights
In addition to Parrish there were a few other offensive gems.
<nobr>Dominic Rhodeshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/dominic-rhodes/84d4b369-5733-400a-a95e-798685c1fd6c/)</nobr> was shifty after catching a pass out of the backfield as he got away from his cover man and got to the end zone in 7-on-7 red zone work.
<nobr>Justin Jenkinshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/justin-jenkins/8d254956-c12b-4c45-bb13-7a553fc466bb/)</nobr> beat his man in coverage and pulled in a fade pass for a touchdown in the back of the end zone on a well thrown ball by <nobr>Gibran Hamdanhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/gibran-hamdan/3e231bd8-7087-4cee-947e-e3f4ee034bcf/)</nobr>.
<nobr>Terrell Owenshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/terrell-owens/12b7ec0d-f7fa-4459-8a4d-ae69fc5b7f69/)</nobr> had a big gainer deep over the middle during 11-on-11 team work.
“I think we’re getting some good work in and everybody is working hard,” said Owens. “For me we’ve got a lot of signals and code words so I have to be on top of my game and I think every day I’m improving in that area.”
<nobr>Steve Johnsonhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/steve-johnson/5ba06129-bba4-45ff-ba53-7ea81833517c/)</nobr> had a good run after the catch play deep down the far sideline that he took for a touchdown. He was also to hold onto to a touchdown pass from Hamdan in heavy traffic later in practice.
But the prettiest offensive play goes to <nobr>Lee Evanshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/lee-evans/baad07e0-362a-498a-a88c-1b4a50e28616/)</nobr>, who pulled in a fade pass from Trent Edwards despite the fact that <nobr>Drayton Florencehttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/drayton-florence/a6e9d266-a5b0-4a79-8cc5-56170d0de88f/)</nobr> tipped the pass, and Evans still got both feet inbounds just before going over the sideline.
Defensively, Florence had a PBU in 11-on-11 work.
<nobr>Aaron Maybinhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/aaron-maybin/155045d6-7d6b-46bf-957b-676c5668d804/)</nobr> got around the corner to get a ‘would be’ sack on Hamdan, or at the very least a QB pressure.
<nobr>Paul Poslusznyhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/paul-posluszny/0d2dac8e-0c21-4441-86fb-65012e2de034/)</nobr> snared a Trent Edwards pass for an interception that was intended for <nobr>Derek Schoumanhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/derek-schouman/08e031d9-a177-454b-88fb-4233480483fb/)</nobr>.
Defensive tackle <nobr>Marcus Smithhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/marcus-smith/5e14b1c1-a00d-4fa5-b0f7-787a7499cd08/)</nobr> batted down a Ryan Fitzpatrick pass at the line of scrimmage.
Rookie cornerback <nobr>Ellis Lanksterhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/ellis-lankster/885b1ddd-bf39-4d02-80b8-e34032fb3dd7/)</nobr> had a pass breakup as he dropped off his cover assignment to make a play on the ball.
And <nobr>Reggie Cornerhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/reggie-corner/a0fe97bf-57a3-4481-a6b2-a88b18236b2c/)</nobr> prevented a 40-50 yard pass play when he raked the ball out of Terrell Owens hands on a deep post.
Working their way back
<nobr>Leodis McKelvinhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/leodis-mckelvin/2e0b511d-6dc5-4cf3-978b-0b4a40f0d1bb/)</nobr> and <nobr>Terrence McGeehttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/terrence-mcgee/86165f42-18bb-4051-a106-5a88ba2ba18d/)</nobr> are not full go yet, but they’re on their way back. Both were participating in individual position drills in practice on Wednesday.
Also coming along is <nobr>James Hardyhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/james-hardy/75b1b658-dde2-4675-bc45-7e25aec2047c/)</nobr>. The receiver was working with trainers on the sidelines Wednesday and actually did some light cutting off his surgically repaired knee. Hardy is almost five months removed from surgery on his ACL.
Notable roles
<nobr>Kyle Wardhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/kyle-ward/3aa0437c-75ea-4322-9199-8067649eed46/)</nobr> got first team nickel reps outside when Corner moved into the slot.
Dominic Rhodes got almost all of the second team reps at running back with <nobr>Marshawn Lynchhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/marshawn-lynch/85ff28be-651a-40ed-be0d-b6595fff1df6/)</nobr> and <nobr>Fred Jacksonhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/fred-jackson/9197889b-672f-42fb-ba04-3b75b8afb81a/)</nobr> rotating in and out with the first unit.
Rookies <nobr>Cary Harrishttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/cary-harris/89af207f-06a5-4913-b0a9-1b09f251fbde/)</nobr> and Ellis Lankster continue to see work at corner with the second unit.
Fifth-round pick <nobr>Nic Harrishttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/nic-harris/aad34cef-a356-4360-aabd-c60b063b22fb/)</nobr> is still getting reps with the second unit at linebacker as well.
Defensive tackle Marcus Smith has been rotating in with the second unit as he relieves veteran <nobr>Spencer Johnsonhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/spencer-johnson/788feb67-4134-48d0-9461-da7a751f06ea/)</nobr>.
With Leodis McKelvin and Terrence McGee still sidelined, Roscoe Parrish and Dominic Rhodes handled kick returns in practice...

Wow. It's June. Butler hasn't been at RT since college days. Let's wait a bit before we crucify him.

Youboty doing individual work (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2009/06/04/youboty-doing-individual-work/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 4th, 2009
For the first time this spring Ashton Youboty is participating in OTAs as he is working his way back from platar fasciitis that landed him on I-R last season.
We’ll have an update if he does team work as well, but in all likelihood he’s just getting his feet wet in preparation for more work next week in minicamp, which he has targeted as a return date.

Those players not in attendance for Thursday’s voluntary OTA practice were rookie Shawn Nelson, Josh Reed and Aaron Schobel. Roscoe Parrish was also absent.
We expect to get an update on Nelson’s absence from Dick Jauron Friday.
For a full report on Day 10 of OTAs check the home page later this afternoon.

Where the hell is Nelson? I hope for his sake that he's got a legit excuse for missing these practices. From what's been stated by Chris Brown, Nelson was already having a difficult time grasping the playbook. I have a feeling he won't have any impact on the field this year. The Bills better hope either Fine or Schouman steps up.

Organized Team Activity: Day 10

Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Posted Jun 4, 2009

It’s been a long road back, but <nobr>Ashton Youbotyhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/ashton-youboty/5f1c6905-36b7-47d7-b4b0-809e335ac27a/)</nobr> is closer than ever to a full return to football as he participated in individual position drills with his teammates at OTAs Thursday. Youboty has been out of action since Week 5 of last season after suffering plantar fasciitis in both feet.
“It felt good being out there with the fellas,” said Youboty. “It felt a little sore here and there, but generally a lot better.”
Youboty is encouraged by how his ailing feet have come along, which is important considering the high impact nature of his position. At this point however, one foot is a bit ahead of the other.
“Right now they’re both going good,” said Youboty. “One is still getting treatment, but once that’s done I’m ready to go.”
The fourth-year defensive back is hopefully he gets the green light from the trainers for the mandatory minicamp, which starts this coming Tuesday for the Bills. But Youboty maintains he has the patience to wait until training camp if necessary.
“(It’s) not frustrating at all,” he said. “I’ve just got to be patient and do what I can at this time and that’s just getting in the books and learning in the film room.”
Youboty believes by training camp his plantar fasciitis will be a distant memory.
“Once you rupture it and it heals it should be steadily gone,” said Youboty. “It shouldn’t be a nagging issue. It should be completely gone and I should be good.”
Working late
Once again <nobr>Lee Evanshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/lee-evans/baad07e0-362a-498a-a88c-1b4a50e28616/)</nobr> and <nobr>Terrell Owenshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/terrell-owens/12b7ec0d-f7fa-4459-8a4d-ae69fc5b7f69/)</nobr> spent a good half hour after practice working with <nobr>Trent Edwardshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/trent-edwards/26db3ddb-7753-4604-ac7f-eb78856a889a/)</nobr> on pass routes.
Edwards seemed to be particularly focused on a specific deep out route working with the receivers on how much touch versus arc to put on the pass until both sides were satisfied.
Second-year wideout Stevie Johnson also joined in for the overtime session. Johnson has been talking with Evans about developing consistency in one's game with respect to running routes.
"It's about doing the same things and being consistent and that's what I've been talking to Lee about is his consistency," said Johnson. "That's how you build confidence in all your quarterbacks."
Highlights
There were some good battles up front in the passing game during 11-on-11 team work. The offensive and defensive lines were matching wits in the blitz game. A couple of times the defense had some good plays called.
<nobr>Chris Kelsayhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/chris-kelsay/4238a78a-b268-46ce-9967-565fdebbe68d/)</nobr> came clean around the edge for a ‘would be’ sack on Trent Edwards when <nobr>Brad Butlerhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/brad-butler/1be744cb-39d5-4c0c-afac-96407d0324a5/)</nobr> was forced to take blitzer <nobr>Kawika Mitchellhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/kawika-mitchell/fd97dc6e-cb60-41cb-8ba3-afc10bbd5ca7/)</nobr> and had no help .

Terrell Owens put another touchdown on the board as he put a double move on the defensive back and was wide open for a 40-yard scoring play. Owens run after catch was about 20 yards. The veteran wideout had six catches on the day.
<nobr>Derek Schoumanhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/derek-schouman/08e031d9-a177-454b-88fb-4233480483fb/)</nobr> had a productive day in the passing game with five receptions including a well executed route in which he gained separation from <nobr>Reggie Cornerhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/reggie-corner/a0fe97bf-57a3-4481-a6b2-a88b18236b2c/)</nobr>.
Defensively, Chris Kelsay and Corner split a sack on a blitz call in 11-on-11.
Kelsay also had a batted pass during team work.
<nobr>Drayton Florencehttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/drayton-florence/a6e9d266-a5b0-4a79-8cc5-56170d0de88f/)</nobr> broke up a pass that he just missed pulling in for an interception on a throw intended for Lee Evans.
Rookie <nobr>Cary Harrishttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/cary-harris/89af207f-06a5-4913-b0a9-1b09f251fbde/)</nobr> has a pass breakup as well on a throw intended for Justin Jenkins.
And linebacker <nobr>Marcus Buggshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/marcus-buggs/dcd62060-85c7-4279-ad3c-8ac6f42e0cd7/)</nobr> picked off a Ryan Fitzpatrick pass over the middle.

Drayton Florence and Reggie Corner were the top pairing for most of the practice.
Undrafted rookie cornerback <nobr>Lydell Sargeanthttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/lydell-sargeant/35277e8e-cd20-44b9-a7a1-4090ffa56c50/)</nobr> saw time as the second team nickel. <nobr>Brandon Roddhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/brandon-rodd/079e7c5d-d161-4241-ad1d-f5afa9b9e03e/)</nobr> has seen the majority of reps at center with the second offensive unit. <nobr>Marvin Philiphttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/marvin-philip/6263a041-82cd-4239-b785-4d248cf40c87/)</nobr> has rotated in for some practices, but Rodd has been with that group more often.
<nobr>Nic Harrishttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/nic-harris/aad34cef-a356-4360-aabd-c60b063b22fb/)</nobr>, Marcus Buggs and undrafted rookie <nobr>Ashlee Palmerhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/ashlee-palmer/2de8748d-175c-43b9-9bee-1c8a14cc17b0/)</nobr> continue to make up the second unit linebacking corps. Buggs has been stepping in for <nobr>Pat Thomashttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/pat-thomas/72adaada-955d-4028-bd3c-346bfe50ea55/)</nobr>, who still is not all the way back from injury.
Switcheroo
Terrence McGee and <nobr>Marshawn Lynchhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/marshawn-lynch/85ff28be-651a-40ed-be0d-b6595fff1df6/)</nobr> had a bit of fun with their practice jerseys Thursday. McGee wore Lynch’s white jersey number 23, while Lynch wore McGee’s blue number 24 jersey.
McGee didn’t participate fully in practice, so it wasn’t an issue, but Trent Edwards likely did a double take when he’d throw to Lynch coming out of the backfield seeing a blue number 24 jersey.
No word as to why they switched jerseys other than out of fun.

I'm thinking the same thing. Nelson better be dead or incapacitated, and I'm not sure incapacitated is a valid excuse. This guy needs every minute of every OTA if he's going to be a factor this year.

Thursday's OTAs

The offense had trouble dealing with some blitze calls from defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. Right tackle Brad Butler was caught in no-man's land when linebacker Kawika Mitchell blitzed and defensive end Chris Kelsay rushed from the same side. Butler picked up the blitzing Mitchell, leaving an unblocked Kelsay with an easy "touch" sack on quarterback Trent Edwards. Kelsay and cornerback Reggie Corner teamed up on another would-be sack. Kelsay also batted down a pass as part of a good day for the veteran. Other defensive hightlights included an interception by linebacker Marcus Buggs, who dropped in coverage to pick off a pass by backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, and cornerback Drayton Florence had a near INT when he jumped a route by receiver Lee Evans to break up a pass from Edwards.

The offense made its share of plays. Edwards and backup Ryan Fitzpatrick beat blitzes with quick throws to running back Fred Jackson and receiver Justin Jenkins, respectively. A good piece of route running by tight end Derek Schouman allowed him to beat Corner over the middle on a catch for sustantial yardage. The player of the day for the offense was turned in by receiver Terrell Owens, who put a great double move on cornerback Daniel Ward and scored on a 50-yard bomb from Edwards. Owens also made a leaping grab between three defenders during an 11-on-11 segment.

Bills fourth-round pick Shawn Nelson has missed the entire third week of voluntary OTAs. On Friday head coach Dick Jauron explained why the rookie tight end has been absent.
“Personal problems,” said Jauron as to why Nelson has not been in attendance. ”But none of it is mandatory. Our guys are really good about informing us. Sometimes they can’t be here and they have issues they need to take care of. That’s fine. We appreciate the fact that they let us know and stay in touch with us.”
Jauron said he anticipates that Nelson will be back for the final week of spring practices next week.

Terrell Owens missed the first voluntary OTA practice in 11 days, but head coach Dick Jauron says the veteran wideout assured he’d be back early next week.
“He wasn’t here today, but it’s good that he does keep us in the loop and he’ll be back early next week,” said Jauron. ”But it has been great that he’s been here every day, most of them.”
Monday will be the last voluntary workout for the Bills, then mandatory minicamp starts on Tuesday.

I don't know the circumstances of Nelson's "personal problems," so I won't take a shot at him. I just hope he's not the kind of immature guy who misses crucial time with this team because of relatively minor issues.

Jauron has comment on Parrish’s wish to play more offense (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2009/06/05/jauron-has-comment-on-parrishs-wish-to-play-more-offense/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 5th, 2009
Bills head coach Dick Jauron was questioned about using Roscoe Parrish more on the offensive side of the ball or perhaps creating a small package of plays designed to take advantage of his skills, knowing Parrish would like to expand his role on the team as a receiver. Here were coach’s comments on the subject.
“Everybody on our football team would like a bigger role that doesn’t have a big role already,” said Jauron. ”They all compete for it and he’s competing and he had a couple of really nice days in our OTAs. He just has to continue to do it and fit into the scheme and understand what we’re doing and how we do it. He’s done a nice job so far. He’ll certainly be a challenger for more playing time and we’ll see where it goes. We’re really happy that he’s been here and happy that he’s with us.”
Parrish had his best day on Wednesday when he made a few big plays in the passing game including a 65-yard touchdown.

Friday OTA (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2009/06/friday-ota.html)

A long Trent Edwards pass to Lee Evans was the highlight of Friday's 90-minute organized-team activity workout. Evans had to use most of his speed to run down the throw down the right sideline. Reggie Corner had decent coverage, and had a piece of Evans' jersey as he made the catch with outstretched arms. It was 50 yards in the air from the line of scrimmage. Deep accuracy was part of the game the Bills coaches wanted Edwards to work on at training camp last year. So far through spring practices, Edwards deep throwing has looked promising. Of course, as always, it comes with the caveat that they're still in shirts and shorts and no pads. A couple plays later Edwards beat a blitz to hit a wide-open Evans over the middle. Evans also caught a long ball from Edwards vs. Drayton Florence in 7-on-7 work. Stevie Johnson ran an excellent route against press coverage and made a good catch on a slant pattern vs. Lydell Sargeant. Aaron Maybin got around the edge and stripped Gibran Hamdan in the pocket during second-teamers 11-on-11 drills. Hamdan recovered the fumble. Reggie Corner had a diving interception of an Edwards pass that was tipped at the line. The BIlls worked on the grass field behind the Bills Fieldhouse. Cornerbacks Terrence McGee, Leodis McKelvin and Ashton Youboty all took part in indiviudal drills but not in team drills. Absent from the session were Aaron Schobel, Terrell Owens, Roscoe Parrish, Josh Reed, Shawn Nelson, Corey McIntyre, Jairus Byrd and Dan Urrego. The Bills have a voluntary workout Monday, then three mandatory "minicamp" practices. Then they're off until training camp in late July.

This is the best statement I heard all offseason. Maybe the reason they didn't call many deep balls was the fact they didn't think Trent was ready to execute them. I know this is still just practice with shorts and t-shirts, but this offense was not doing this last year at this point in practice. That's the only positive of this.

It does seem like he's been connecting on at least a couple each practice. They seem to be running more slants as well too. Hopefully it translates into the regular season.

Organized Team Activity Day 11

Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Posted Jun 5, 2009

As shorthanded as the Bills secondary has been the past week or so at the cornerback position, the receiver contingent matched them Friday. Between injury and absence for the voluntary workout, Buffalo’s receiving corps was down to just four available receivers.
“We’ve been very unlucky at that position with injuries,” said head coach Dick Jauron. “Only James (Hardy) was serious, but they’ve all been nagging and they can’t work so we had four guys today and they did a great job. They got a lot of work. We controlled the practice and backed it off when we had to, but they did a nice job of working through it.”
The four wideouts that put in overtime Friday were <nobr>Lee Evanshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/lee-evans/baad07e0-362a-498a-a88c-1b4a50e28616/)</nobr>, <nobr>Felton Hugginshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/felton-huggins/83321008-91ee-4ac9-8baa-a78c96b4181b/)</nobr>, <nobr>Justin Jenkinshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/justin-jenkins/8d254956-c12b-4c45-bb13-7a553fc466bb/)</nobr> and Stevie Johnson. Still sitting with injuries were <nobr>C.J. For Owens it was his first absence in 11 voluntary OTA practices.
Still up in the air
Starting cornerbacks <nobr>Terrence McGeehttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/terrence-mcgee/86165f42-18bb-4051-a106-5a88ba2ba18d/)</nobr> (shoulder) and <nobr>Leodis McKelvinhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/leodis-mckelvin/2e0b511d-6dc5-4cf3-978b-0b4a40f0d1bb/)</nobr> (finger) were again limited in practice with both participating only during individual position work. At this point in the offseason Dick Jauron is erring on the side of caution. Whether either defensive back participates in team work is still a question mark.
“I would say maybe,” said Jauron. “Maybe. We won’t take any chances at all. We have to talk to the doctors before we put them back out there.”
Youboty coming along
The news is a bit better for <nobr>Ashton Youbotyhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/ashton-youboty/5f1c6905-36b7-47d7-b4b0-809e335ac27a/)</nobr> (plantar fasciitis). After participating in practice for the first time since early October on Thursday, Youboty did a little more Friday as he was sprinkled in during team work.
Youboty got some snaps working in the slot as a nickel corner with the first unit. Jauron sounded more encouraged about his prospects for next week than McGee or McKelvin.
“(Head athletic trainer) Bud (Carpenter) feels pretty good about him so we’re anticipating that maybe he can go a little harder,” said Jauron.

Jauron has comment on Parrish’s wish to play more offense (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2009/06/05/jauron-has-comment-on-parrishs-wish-to-play-more-offense/)

I usually don't mind DJ's conferences but this sounds like a cop-out to me. Or maybe a challenge. "This is the way we play offense, and if he wants to play, he better learn to do it our way and learn it well."

Monday's OTA

The Bills held their last voluntary spring practice Monday on the grass field behind the Bills Fieldhouse. Cornerback Terrence McGee was back working fully after sitting out the past couple weeks with a sore shoulder. The Bills allowed the second-string linebacking unit of Nic Harris (strong), Marcus Buggs (middle) and Ashley Palmer (weak) get most of the work with the starting units, while the starting backers mostly watched. Harris and Buggs were on the field most because they also played in the nickel package. Harris looked good on the blitz a couple times. Palmer, from Alabama, had an interception of a Trent Edwards pass on an underneath throw. Harris' blitz on that play forced the throw. The offense under Edwards in general looked decent while running a lot of no-huddle mode. Terrell Owens was not in attendance. In his absence, Justin Jenkins made a few nice catches. Fred Jackson continues to show good hands receiving. Stevie Jackson made a great fake on Ashton Youboty on an underneath route to get open. Youboty also competed fully. Chris Kelsy blew up a draw play in a big way. A screen pass to Marshawn Lynch was very well executed. Cornerback Drayton Florence had pretty tight coverage much of the workout. Reggie Corner had a pass breakup (as usual). Also absent were Roscoe Parrish, C.J. Hawthorne, Shawn Nelson and Jairus Byrd. The practices Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the only three mandatory sessions of the spring.
