Negotiations have begun between the Jets and Hadley Engelhard, agent for top draft choice Dewayne Robertson.

Engelhard said he spoke with assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum on Monday, and after NFL meetings conclude this week, the sides are expected to talk Thursday and Friday and perhaps during the weekend.

Many teams prefer to proceed slowly with first-round negotiations and wait for other teams to "set the market" by signing their No. 1 picks. But last year the Jets took the initiative by making defensive end Bryan Thomas, taken 22nd overall, the first first-rounder to sign after draft day.

A similar game plan could be in place to sign Robertson, the Kentucky defensive tackle selected fourth overall last month.

PHILADELPHIA - Shortly after the NFL's edict that minorities must be interviewed for all head coaching openings, the Lions violated the policy by hiring Steve Mariucci without bringing in any other candidates.
Five minority candidates turned down interview requests from Lions president Matt Millen, knowing that Mariucci-to-Detroit was a done deal. At a breakfast symposium yesterday at the NFL meetings that included owners and executives, about half the head coaches and nearly 100 assistants, Jets coach Herm Edwards delivered a strong message: Interview when called.

"I feel it's our obligation as coaches to don't say, well, I'm not going to go because they already got the guy hired," Edwards said. "My whole issue on that is it's like we do every week - we set a game plan to win the game. Unless we go out and play the game, we don't know if the game plan is any good or not."

Edwards, picked by the NFL to be part of a panel discussion on diversity, said his remarks were not aimed at the Lions situation or specifically at minorities, but coming four months after the Detroit fiasco, it was easy to connect the dots. He said he was trying to make prospective coaches understand that the reason the diversity committee was set up was to provide opportunities for them to interview.
