    Broncos' opener not a walkover

    Lewis-led Bengals now have some bite
    When the Broncos' 2003 schedule came out last month and you saw the first game on the list, you immediately and automatically put a big "W" next to Sept. 7.

    It was a knee-jerk reaction, just part of human nature. After all, the Broncos' opening game at Paul Brown Stadium is against the Cincinnati Bengals. Yes, the team with the goofy tiger-striped helmets, cheap ownership, 12 consecutive seasons without a winning team and a 55-137 record since 1991.

    But the Bungles are changing their stripes. First-year coach Marvin Lewis, the architect of the Ravens' great 2001 defense, actually has Cincinnati fans excited. Lewis is intent on building the Bengals' defense, and he has made some impressive moves, including signing free-agent defensive end Duane Clemons and former Broncos and Raiders cornerback Tory James.
