Joseph Jefferson has to become one of those second-year success stories.
The seldom-used cornerback doesn't have to become a star for the Colts defense in 2003. Nobody's asking him to turn into Deion Sanders overnight.
But Jefferson, a third-round pick in 2002, does have to become the kind of player who moves from invisible to extremely noticeable, especially to opposing wide receivers. And especially in the Colts secondary.
Consider Tampa Bay defensive back Ronde Barber, who went from no time his rookie season to showtime his second season to eventual Super Bowl champion. There have been plenty of similar stories throughout the league's history.
The Colts, who started their 14-day summer school session Monday, believe Jefferson can be one of them. More than anything, they need him to become one of them.
"I've always thought that most guys really have their most improvement between their first and second year," Colts coach Tony Dungy said. "They feel comfortable, they understand what they're doing -- especially if you stay within the same system, which we're doing.
