Re: At-Risk Sports Teams: Buffalo Bills
The Bills are in good financial shape, despite low ticket prices and the stagnant WNY economy. They have a sweetheart stadium lease agreement, no debt, a strong fan base that keeps the stadium sold out, and successful regionalization and other business/marketing efforts. Because of these factors, the teams' net revenue is in the top 1/3-1/2 of the league.
The national media always assume that because we are in a small, economically depressed market, the team must be struggling. This is simply not the case.
Ralph, at 90, is the biggest threat to this franchise's future, with his constant bashing of the Buffalo area, and his insistence on selling to the highest bidder.
The Bills could easily stay in Buffalo for at least the midterm future, if Ralph would modify his stance. There are far less viable franchises than the Bills, and the amount of debt incurred in moving a team makes no sense in this economy.Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?
