Defense must make big plays (http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/738494.html)
The Buffalo Bills' defense made significant improvements last season. It allowed fewer yards and points, had more success on third down and was stingier in the red zone than the previous year. It was 14th in yards allowed, up from 31st in 2007. But for all of the Bills' defensive strengths, there was one glaring weakness:

It will be great if the defense makes some big plays... but it would also be great if the offense got into the endzone once in awhile when handed the extra opportunities.

If Schobel regains his Pro Bowl form and Maybin is as good as advertised, the Bills could have a formidable 1-2 punch. "Having a Maybin and a Schobel on the edges to go and attack the quarterback, somebody is going to make a play," Fewell said. "I think that is going to add sack numbers and add pressures for turnovers."
Fewell is intrigued by Maybin's athletic ability, and wants to use the rookie like the Baltimore Ravens utilize Terrell Suggs, a hybrid pass rushing defensive end/outside linebacker.
Maybin was projected as an outside linebacker had he gone to a team with the 3-4 defensive scheme, and his pre-draft workouts suggested he could make the transition.
"My gut says put him on the edge and let him go, but his athletic ability says you can do a whole lot more," Fewell said. "I'm interested in how much I can do with him. How much I can do will depend on how much he can learn, how much he can retain and how much he can execute without having a lot of mental mistakes."

If Maybin can keep up, he's going to surprise even the naysayers. It looks like we are going to be very aggressive on both sides of the ball this year. I'm going to jump out of my seat the first time they come out with a 3-4 on an obvious passing down.

"Jacksonville's Jack Del Rio and Buffalo's Dick Jauron sat down to talk about their respective teams, and both coaches said they worked on a 3-4 defense as a variation of their 4-3 schemes. Each believes it will come in handy this coming season, especially in passing situations."
