Stroud could be out a*week

Marcus Stroud’s strained hamstring could keep him on the shelf up to a week.
Head coach Dick Jauron said his defensive tackle could be out from 5-7 days with the ailment. Stroud himself called the injury minor after tweaking his hamstring in practice Saturday afternoon.
Spencer Johnson has been playing in his place with the first unit.
In other injury news, it appears that Justise Hairston’s season is over. The running back was injured during individual position drills in the first practice Saturday morning and did not return. Jauron indicated that the injury could be season ending.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- There are only so many times you can ask Terrell Owens (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1056) a version of "So, big guy, how's it going?" when the Buffalo Bills (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=buf) still haven't put on full pads since they signed him in March.
With NFL commissioner Roger Goodell expected to announce Michael Vick (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=2549)'s conditional reinstatement next week -- maybe the league's biggest story along with Brett Favre (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=112)'s looming decision -- I asked one of the most outspoken men in sports what his take was on the controversial subject.
Owens provided the news of the day (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4356802).
He called out the commish, asked the NFL Players Association to get more involved on Vick's behalf and asked players around the league to be publicly supportive.
Owens was critical of Goodell's handling of Vick's pending return now that the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback recently completed a 23-month federal prison sentence for his involvement in a dogfighting ring.
Goodell suspended Vick indefinitely in August 2007 and is expected to make him sit (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4353468) at the start of the season, perhaps four games.
"I think the way the commissioner is handling it is unfair to Michael Vick," Owens said. "I think he's done the time for what he's done. I don't think it's really fair for him to be suspended four more games. It's almost like kicking a dead horse in the ground.
"A lot of the guys around the league needs to speak up. I think the players' union needs to step in because the guy's already suffered so much, and to add a four-game suspension onto a two-year prison sentence, I mean, that's ridiculous."
Before you get upset at Owens for supporting someone convicted of such abject cruelty to man's best friend, please note that at no point did he endorse or excuse Vick's actions. Owens merely opined Vick has served a sentence handed down by a federal court and that should suffice.
We'll see if Owens' stepping forward will lead other players around the league to do the same.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills coach Dick Jauron is disappointed that his top four draft picks remain unsigned and aren't on the field for training camp.

Hairston likely done for the season (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2009/07/hairston-likely-done-for-the-season.html)

Justise Hairston, a first-year running back out of Central Connecticut, could miss the rest of the season with a knee injury Buffalo Bills coach Dick Jauron said on Sunday.
Hairston was injured during no-contact conditioning drills during the morning session of Saturday’s practice. The injury was initially believed to be minor although Hairston did not return for the afternoon session.
“That was so disappointing for the young man in literally a walk through and it was so freakish," Jauron said. “It involved no contact at all. It’s a knee injury and we think it may be season ending. It’s very, very disappointing for us and extremely disappointing for the young man.’’
Also, defensive tackle Marcus Stroud injured his hamstring and Jauron said he could miss the next 5-7 days of practice.

TO not lobbying (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2009/07/to-not-lobbying.html)

Just to make one thing clear regarding Terrell Owens' comments today regarding Michael Vick's prospective reinstatement to the NFL: The Bills receiver was not in any way lobbying for Vick to play with the Bills. The issue about Vick being reinstated was raised strictly from a league standpoint. When Owens was asked about how he would feel about Vick being a teammate, he made it clear he was not putting himself in a position of influencing the Bills in any way.
"Well, that’s not for me to decide,” Owens said.
So this wasn't any premeditated plan by Owens to bring up Vick. He was asked about it, he responded candidly.
The Bills will not be in the market for Vick whenever he's eligible to return.

Sunday AM workout (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2009/07/sunday-am-workout.html)

Long completions will usually be the highlight of training camp practices, and Trent Edwards completed three of them this morning, one to Lee Evans deep down the left sideline and two to Terrell Owens. Evans got behind Leodis McKelvin in 11-on-11 drills. Owens got wide open on the left side fo the field and scampered down the sideline for a touchdown. A little later, he got behind McKelvin for a 40-yard strike down the left sideline. He had to slow up just a tad to catch it. Kawika Mitchell might have hit the quarterback on that play if it had been a game.
Kyle Williams asserted his presence in the middle of the defensive line. He penetrated to blow up a run by Dominic Rhodes. He got pressure to force a throw-away by Edwards. Paul Posluszny looked good in coverage on Marshawn Lynch on a scramble-pass by Edwards. Owens had one drop on a pass over the middle. Backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrick had two good completions back-to-back. he hit Roscoe Parrish on a deep out then hit a wude-open Stevie Johnson down the left sideliine. Xavier Omon made a good blitz pickup to allow that pass to get off.
Seth McKinney is working at right guard and Kirk Chambers at left guard with the starting unit.
The second-team defense this morning included: Ryan Denney, John McCargo, Marcus Smith and Copeland Bryan on the line, Ashlee Palmer (weak), Pat Thomas (middle) and Nic Harris (strong) at linebacker, with Ashton Youboty, Drayton Florence, George Wilson and Ko Simpson in the secondary. Chris Ellis mixed in with Bryan. Smith was up from the third team today because Marcus Stroud is sitting out with a tweaked hamstring.

Practice Notes - Day 2

Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Posted Jul 26, 2009

The offense was ready to respond Sunday morning following an afternoon workout Saturday that saw the passing game struggle. Buffalo’s quarterbacks made more plays, and at times did so in the face of pressure.
Perry Fewell’s defense appeared to be making more pressure calls through the course of the team segments of practice, but Buffalo’s offense for the most part adjusted.

It's Here! The Buffalo Bills Training Camp has officially begun and this time, something was different. That's right, it was Terrell Owens' first Training Camp practice as a member of the Buffalo Bills. If yesterday was any indictation, T.O. will definitely enjoy being a Buffalo Bill. The fans came out in droves, as St. John Fisher College was packed for both practices. Many of them were wearing #81 jerseys and screaming his name or cheering when he caught the ball. The excitement from the crowd actually reminded me of a home pre-season game. All that was missing was the tailgating. As for the practice itself, Coach Jauron had the players start off slow, by not wearing pads and not allowing much contact. The team worked on a few special teams drills, individual drills with their own units, 7-on-7 and of course the 11-on-11 full team drill.

Evans, Owens put in extra work (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2009/07/26/evans-owens-put-in-extra-work/)

By Chris Brown - Posted July 26th, 2009
For a second straight day Lee Evans and Terrell Owens put in some extra work after practice.
Evans was working on his catching as he was taking passes from the JUGs machine. As he went along he’d take a step closer every two or three catches to the point where he was within five or six yards from the machine, and he was still catching them. He also had the JUGS machine operator lower the trajectory of the ball so he could practice catching passes down around his shoe tops. Out of about 50 passes I didn’t see one drop.
Owens meanwhile was working on release techniques off the line with receivers coach Tyke Tolbert.
“I’ve been in the game for awhile so every coach has their coaching style,” said Owens. ”Teaching different things as far as releases. Obviously there are some different routes. So anything that can be an advantage for me, with my size, and kind of mix up things from what I’ve done in the past to obviously make me a better receiver. Every coach that I’ve had, like I said, has a different coaching style, so I try to adopt and adjust to what they have.”

Offense getting it’s 3-4 prep work in (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2009/07/26/offense-getting-its-3-4-prep-work-in/)

By Chris Brown - Posted July 26th, 2009
Just because Buffalo’s defense runs a 4-3 scheme doesn’t mean the offense isn’t getting itself properly prepared for the 10 games they’ll be playing this season against 3-4 fronts.
Trent Edwards explained how they’re making sure they get their reps in against the 3-4.
“It’s difficult to ask our defense to go into a live practice and run a 3-4 when that’s really not what they run,” he said. ”We’re doing a lot in our walk through periods just to make sure we’re prepared for Monday night against the Patriots because we need to be ready and hit the ground running. That’s what we’re doing right now. We are working on it every day.”
Buffalo will also have the benefit of facing 3-4 defensive fronts this preseason when they play Pittsburgh and Green Bay, which should make them even more prepared for New England in Week 1 and the rest of their division.
The Bills offense struggled against 3-4 fronts last season more than they succeeded when it came to passing. The run game worked better against the 3-4s than the pass. What hurt were a lot of long down and distance situations when the opponent knew they were going to pass. New England, New York or Miami would then drop eight men into coverage and there were few places to even take a chance and throw the ball.
So they’ll have to get more yardage on first and second down against those teams (not easy) so that third down is not more often than not an obvious passing situation.

Sunday PMs (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2009/07/sunday-pms.html)

Cornerback Leodis McKelvin continued to have a rough day in the afternoon session. Lee Evans made the catch of the afternoon, outjumping both McKelvin and safety Donte Whitner for the ball near the goal line on a 40-yard pass from Trent Edwarads. The pass was a bit underthrown, but Evans timed his jump perfectly. Late in the workout, Edwards hit Terrell Owens on a turn-in pass. Owens made a quick pivot to the outside, McKelvin slipped to the ground, and Owens was off to the races down the left sideline. On the next play, Gibran Hamdan took over at QB. He threw a 20-yard pass for the right sideline that was tipped by both Drayton Florence and the receiver (I think it was Felton Huggins), then safety Ko Simpson, coming up from behind, made the pickoff. That prompted one fan in the Growney Stadium stands to holler out, "You're worth millions!"
It was a virtual full house at St. John Fisher, with a good 3,000 in attendance. Tickets for Monday's night practice are sold out.

Levitre in the fold (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2009/07/levitre-in-the-fold.html)

The second of the Bills' two second-round draft choices, guard Andy Levitre, is in the fold. He agreed to terms on a four-year contract. Terms were not disclosed, but it's probably worth about $3.6 million with about $1.8 million guaranteed. Levitre will be on the field for what is expected to be the first practice in pads on Monday.
"He's the complete package," said Levitre's Colorado-based agent, Leo Goeas. "He is extremely smart. I think in their offense, with a lot of no-huddle being used, calls are changing on the line of scrimmage quickly, and you have to be a smart guy in that type of system. ... From a physical standpoint, Andy is a blue-collar, hard worker. He likes to mix it up in the trenches. You don't see him on the ground much because he plays with great balance."

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills have finished their second day of training camp, already completing their two-a-day portion. There will be single sessions and walkthroughs henceforth at St. John Fisher College.
Monday morning's workout will be their first in full pads. Plenty of kapows should resound.
"The intensity picks up a little bit," Buffalo receiver Lee Evans said. "When you have pads on the intensity picks up. It's easy to run around here with no pads on, but when the pads come on it's a different ball game."
Until then, here are a few observations and updates from the weekend:

Second-year right cornerback Leodis McKelvin should have stayed in bed Sunday. Evans and Terrell Owens abused last year's 11th overall draft pick in both sessions.
In the morning, Owens torched him twice and Evans once on long, arcing Trent Edwards bombs. In the afternoon, Evans made a sensational grab near the end zone on another long ball despite coverage from McKelvin and safety Donte Whitner. Not long after, Owens caught a quick in and then cut back to the sideline, sending the helpless McKelvin sliding on his rump.
At least McKelvin was getting beaten by some of the best in the business. Then again, he'll have to defend similar players during the season.

Sophomore tackle Demetrius Bell, who has been the second-team left tackle, took some first-team reps at left guard Sunday.
Marcus Stroud revealed he has been limited because he tweaked a hamstring Saturday. He called the injury "minor."
Langston Walker, after years as a right tackle, on learning the left side now that Pro Bowler Jason Peters is gone: "I'm a prideful person, and it is a challenge. And I'm sure there are a lot of detractors out there, but I'm here to prove them wrong."
Neither loss is substantial, but the Bills have suffered a pair of season-ending injuries already.
Linebacker John DiGiorgio was waived because he failed his physical after right knee surgery.

Running back Justise Hairston somehow suffered a season-ending knee injury during a walkthrough drill. Hairston was a long shot to make the team, but the New England Patriots' sixth-round draft pick in 2007 was a neat story, making the Bills camp roster through a group tryout after spending last year out of football.
Edwards on optimizing the no-huddle offense: "The hard thing about that is to make sure the defense doesn't get into a routine and understanding their calls -- making sure you're changing some things up, making sure you're putting in some double moves. You're putting in some dummy calls in there, too. ... It's pretty easy for a defense to pick up on some calls. So that's something that we're working on every day, and I feel like we're progressing pretty well on that."

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills finally signed one of their top four draft choices.
Second-round pick Andy Levitre, expected to start at guard, should be on the field Monday (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4357093), when the Bills put on the pads for the first time in training camp.
Still unsigned are the Bills' top three picks: first-round defensive end Aaron Maybin, first-round guard Eric Wood and second-round defensive back Jairus Byrd.
But landing Levitre is a positive step for an offensive line that has shuffled around. All five projected starters are in new positions, and every practice rep will be precious in the jelling process for a unit that depends on cohesion more than any other in the NFL.
The Bills traded two-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters. They moved Langston Walker from right tackle to left and right guard Brad Butler to right tackle. They signed free-agent center Geoff Hangartner and plan on plugging Levitre and Wood in at guard.
Other than that, the personnel is the same as last year.
On Saturday, Bills head coach Dick Jauron expressed dismay (http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afceast/0-9-50/Jauron-displeased-with-four-absent-Bills-rookies.html) at the rookie holdouts.
"They need to be here," Jauron said. "I understand all the things that go into the negotiations, both sides, but they need to be here. They'll miss work that's hard to make up."

Afternoon highlights
The timing of the passing game was noticeably better for the second and third units in the afternoon practice session. Ryan Fitzpatrick took more shots down the field and was rewarded.
Roscoe Parrish made a couple of plays for him including an acrobatic grab that he held up to the crowd to show that he made the catch.
Steve Johnson made a great catch along the far sideline as he twisted and turned in the air to pull the pass in.
P.K. Sam made a difficult catch with a defender draped all over him. Unfortunately linebacker Marcus Buggs stripped the ball from him after the catch drawing the ire of receivers coach Tyke Tolbert.
<nobr>Jonathan Stuparhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/jonathan-stupar/8b901750-d604-49ed-a0a4-f63dc905f2e3/)</nobr> made another nice play for the second day in a row with a high reaching grab while backpedaling toward the sideline on a throw from Fitzpatrick.
Buffalo’s top two wideouts made some plays as well. Terrell Owens caught a few big gainers, with his best coming on a route he turned inside out. Owens ran what looked like a square-in made the catch and with his defender overplaying him to the inside, made a spin move and bolted down the sideline for what would have been a touchdown.
Lee Evans however, had the play of the day as he out jumped two defenders to pull in a 40-yard touchdown pass from Edwards.
“It’s one of the ones that you know you just took a chance on,” said Evans. “That’s one of the things where we’re trying to get him [Edwards] too. Sometimes things aren’t perfect, but you’ve got to take a chance sometimes and it worked out on that play. It wasn’t the perfect look but he just took a chance.”
Defensively there were some plays made too. <nobr>Aaron Schobelhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/aaron-schobel/d95551cd-2385-484c-92a9-d402ae6bee39/)</nobr> had a quarterback pressure.
<nobr>Terrence McGeehttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/terrence-mcgee/86165f42-18bb-4051-a106-5a88ba2ba18d/)</nobr> had a pass breakup on a throw intended for Owens.
<nobr>Ellis Lanksterhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/ellis-lankster/885b1ddd-bf39-4d02-80b8-e34032fb3dd7/)</nobr> had an interception on a throw intended for Steve Johnson over the middle.
Chris Ellis had a would be sack on a good rush off the edge.
And <nobr>Ko Simpsonhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/img/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/ko-simpson/85c703ad-efd7-40ce-b3c1-e2c2fb5bf3dd/)</nobr> notched his first interception of camp on a pass that was initially deflected by Drayton Florence.
