PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) -- Buffalo Bills (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/bills) receiver Steve Johnson (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/9001) is out indefinitely with an injury to his rib cartilage.

Coach Dick Jauron said Monday that Johnson's ribs are very sore a day after the player was hurt in practice during training camp.

The injury is a setback to the second-year player, who was expected to compete for the team's fifth receiver spot.

Per Buffalo News:

Second-year receiver Stevie Johnson, who looked very good the first two days of camp, is out with a rib injury. Defensive end Copeland Bryan had to be helped off the field with a hamstring injury.

"It's not a broken rib," Jauron said of Johnson. "I think it's a cartilage injury between the ribs, and it may keep him out for a little while. Very sore and very tender."

I hope he's back before the season starts. He is going to be a very good receiver in the NFL if he gets his chance.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Lets be clear...

Indefinitely doesn't mean forever, it just means its not clear how long. That could be years or days.

I think its a few weeks and he misses the HOF game but makes the rest.

Hell be fine. If its the type of injury I think it is, than pain is the biggest issue. It should help up quick and as long as he lets it heal without re aggravating it than he should be on the field in a week or two. Three at the most. I wouldnt put him out that long, but then again everyone heals differently and I havent seen the x-rays or anything.

Tell you what though, Johnson is going to be a star if he gets a chance, and barring a resigned TO, next year he may be our third guy.

We're deep at WR and SJ is low on the depth chart. It sucks for his development, but isn't going to hurt the team much.

I just hope that he or Hardy make major strides this year, since TO is basically a rent-a-player.

yeah, pain...pain as in breathing...it will hurt him to expand his chest for breathing...let's hope it doesn't take too long...cartilage injuries can take as long as bone to heal.

depends on the extent of the damage. I really hope its not bad though. Youre right, any rib injury makes in very painful to breathe. I can tell you from experience, also sleeping sucks, you often have to wake up and take more medication because you accidentally shifted wrong.

I know this, but SJ missing time is certainly not a "positive."

He needs reps and practice time. This guy could be a big contributor this year for us.
