TC Day 4 & 5: News, Notes, and Updates

Trent a secret weapon at wideout?

By Chris Brown - Posted July 29th, 2009
The Bills like every other team are preparing their defense for possible Wildcat looks this season in practice at camp. Trent Edwards however, feels he’s being underutilized when lined up at wideout.
“That’s really frustrating me because I do feel like I have a lot of potential at the receiver position,” Edwards said laughing. ”I really feel handcuffed out there. They just want me to block and that’s not really my strength. My strength is running, getting the ball in my hands and making guys miss in the passing game (still laughing), but our quarterback I think in that particular set can’t get me the ball, so that’s kind of frustrating on that side of it because I’ve worked harder at this off-season trying to make sure that my receiver skills are where they need to be. But its just something to try and keep teams off balance and keep guys guessing and it makes our defense prepare for the Miami’s and teams that do do that. It’s good for our defense to go up against that, too.”
When asked about the dynamic trio in the offensive backfield when Edwards is split out wide, consisting of Fred Jackson, Marshawn Lynch and Roscoe Parrish, Edwards again was a comedian.
“You don’t think that I’m dynamic out there either though,” ask Edwards laughing again. ”I was thinking we could just put me back in there and it’s kind of the same replacement as Roscoe Parrish, but I don’t think so.”
Edwards in all seriousness does think working some wildcat into ractice is a good idea.
“It gives us something else to change things up, mix things up a little bit,” he said. ”And I do think we need to work on that and we’re going to continue to improve.”

McCargo update, P.K. Sam leaves practice

By Chris Brown - Posted July 29th, 2009
John McCargo’s injury status was updated by Dick Jauron after practice.
The Bills head coach said he twinged his hamstring just a little bit, similar to the way Marcus Stroud did and Stroud was back practicing after missing just two days.
Meanwhile P.K. Sam left practice with a strained quad. No word on how much time he could miss.

Please god tell me our coaching staff is not dumb enough to actually let Trent Edwards go out on a passing route....

        Johnson injury update

By Chris Brown - Posted July 29th, 2009
Steve Johnson was moving slowly off the field Tuesday after watching the night practice. Slowly because any sudden movements aggravate his torn rib cartilage.
“I’m just frustrated that I can’t be out there, seeing how everybody’s working hard and it’s hot out here, we have receivers going down and I can’t be out there to help them out,” said Johnson. ”But time’s going to heal me and that’s all I’m waiting for is my time.”
Buffalo could be down to just six healthy receivers Wednesday, if P.K. Sam can’t take the field Wednesday. Johnson isn’t sure when he’ll be able to return either.
“There’s no given time,” he said. ”It’s day-to-day. I can’t make any sudden moves or anything. It’s a little hard breathing but I just keep giving it the ice and the (stimulation). That’s all I can do right now – ice and stim and rest. That’s it.”

WR Caldwell gets look from Bills

By Chris Brown - Posted July 29th, 2009
The Bills are suddenly thin at receiver with four of their 10 on the roster now watching practice. Knowing their healthy receivers could be taxed even more, and thus have a greater potential for injury themselves the club reportedly worked out Reche Caldwell.
According to the Tampa Tribune Caldwell worked out Tuesday for the Bills. He was out of football last season and most recently played for Washington (2007) and New England (2006). He’s 30-year old.
I think at this point they have to get someone in here because having just six wideouts in the training camp setting when there are so many reps is going to run the receivers that can practice ragged.
Buffalo’s roster is currently at 78, not counting Wood, Byrd and Maybin, and that figures to change soon with Wood close to being done. But there is an available roster spot to add a WR even if it’s just for a few days to get through practice.
          Stay tuned.

Trent at receiver! We're signing Vick! We're signing Vick! We're signing Vick!

Just thought I'd pre-empt the tinfoil-hat crowd on that.

Bills Roundup: First Night Practice of Camp (3:18) Posted 07/28/09

                Practice Notes - Day 4
The Bills may be down to just two unsigned draft picks very soon. Head coach Dick Jauron confirmed Tuesday night after practice that first-round pick. Eric Wood is close to a contract agreement with the club.

Offense continues to impress at Bills' first night practice
The Buffalo Bills held their first night practice of 2009 training camp on Tuesday night, but the biggest news of the day came from the team's home base in Orchard Park, where terms have been agreed upon for the rookie contract of OG Eric Wood.

                  No Wood yet

Final terms of the agreement with first-round draft pick Eric Wood still are being hammered out. He was not at the walkthrough session this morning and is not expected at this afternoon's practice. Probably Thursday.
