CORAL GABLES — When the stopwatch was clicked, many of the players had a hard time believing the digits were true.
Miami Hurricanes senior Sam Shields shocked those in attendance when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.2 seconds in an offseason workout. Some claimed the watch was broken.
"People on the team talk about it," Shields said. "I guess that's what they expected out of me."
Blazing speed has been ordinary for Shields, but his status with the team is unexpected. Once a promising wide receiver, Shields has watched his career take a U-turn and now is looking for redemption in the unlikeliest of places. He was moved to defensive back last spring, trying to make the most of an otherwise unfulfilling stay in Coral Gables.
