Lost wallet apparently led to shots at Bennett

A missing wallet apparently is what caused a confrontation at a St. Paul nightclub that led to shots being fired at a vehicle driven by Minnesota Vikings running back Michael Bennett last week, authorities said Wednesday.

The three shots were fired at Bennett's vehicle after he left Club Cancun on May 12. His vehicle was hit once as he drove on L'Orient Street just south of Larpenteur Avenue in St. Paul. And his vehicle was hit twice as he traveled west on Interstate Hwy. 94 near the Lowry Hill Tunnel in Minneapolis.

Bennett, 24, was at Club Cancun with quarterback Daunte Culpepper and defensive lineman Willie Howard on May 11. The three were reportedly celebrating Culpepper's new 10-year contract, potentially worth $102 million.

Bennett has told police that he thought the shooting was related to the incident at the club. Authorities said the shots were fired shortly after 1 a.m. on May 12. Bennett, however, did not file a report with St. Paul police until late Tuesday afternoon.

The State Patrol also is investigating.

Authorities don't know why Bennett waited to file the police report.
