Forked from: Dick says he did Trent a "disservice" by not gameplanning for GB or Pitt (http://www.billszone.com/fanzone/showpost.php?postid=2974952)

Most teams do not game plan in preseason. In our case it is even more obvious because we have problems with the 3-4 defense as it is.

Knowing that we spent the week game planning for NE rather than for a meaningless Detroit game is comforting. They need the extra week.

I think a larger issue is, Just what are preseason games for?
Teams hide their playbook.
They don't game plan for the opponent.
Teams don't face each other at their best.
Therefore how they can be a good barometer for anything? What makes them more valuable than a scrimmage or even mere practice? How are those not just as authentic as far as evaluating talent?
In a closed practice, teams can run their full playbook and see what their players can do in the plays the team actually intends to run.
Compared to that, preseason games are just fashion shows.
Not to mention it's a colossal ripoff for the fans. Oh wait, I guess I just answered my own question.
