    Defying Predictions

2008: Arizona Cardinals - A team nobody expected to win. A team who benched their starting quarterback a week before the season for a 40 year old QB who hadn't "proved himself" to be a good QB in 7 years. Arizona would make it to the Super Bowl and almost win it.

2008: Miami Dolphins - After a 1-15 season, nobody expected anything from this team. They added rookie "unproven" LT Jake Long and embattled, recently scrapped, unhealthy and unproven over a few years QB, Chad Pennington. The Dolphins would win the AFC east and earn a playoff bid. They also beat the Patriots with the never before seen, unproven offense known as the Wildcat.

2008: Baltimore Ravens - After a dissapointing playoff loss, they would lose Steve McNair to retirement. They would then win 11 games with "unproven" rookie quarterback, Joe Flacco, and "unproven" running backs rookie Ray Rice and fullback Leron McClain. The team would make it to the AFC championship.

2007: Cleveland Browns - A team everybody expected to draft first the following year. Had a contract holdout with then-thought to be franchise QB Brady Quinn. "Unproven" QB Derek Anderson stepped in and had a pro bowl season, leading the Browns to the playoffs.

2007: Jacksonville Jaguars - The team would bench Byron Leftwich due to an ankle problem and insert "unproven" inexperienced QB David Garrard. Garrard would lead the team on an impressive playoff run.

2006: San Diego Chargers - After losing Drew Brees to free agency, "unproven" QB Phillip Rivers got his first season of starting. He would go on to earn a pro bowl bid. This season, their coach would be fired for losing in the playoffs.

2006: The Kansas City Chiefs - This team would earn a playoff bid by finishing 2nd in the AFC West. Does anybody have any idea who the oline or quarterbacks were for this team? Yeah me neither.

2006: THE CHICAGO BEARS - This year, with "unproven" quarterbacks Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton. The Bears would earn a super bowl birth.

2006: New Orleans Saints - With Drew Brees as the only "proven player" this team would go from 2nd worst in the league to an NFC Championship game. Unproven rookie Reggie Bush would prove to be exciting, as well as "unproven" 7th round draft choice, Marques Colston, leading the team in receptions.

2005: Cincinattie Bengals - With "unproven" first year starting QB Carson Palmer, the Bengals would earn a playoff birth in 2005. They even had their fans coin a song, in reference to the fact that NOBODY expected Cinci to do anything, called "Who dey?"

2004: San Diego Chargers - Drew Brees had struggled through the first 3 years of his career, so much that the Chargers would draft Phillip Rivers with the 4th choice in the draft. (Obviously the Giants trade doesn't need to be mentioned)...With Rivers holding out, then embattled and "unproven" quarterback Drew Brees would put up a pro bowl season, leading the team to a division crown and playoff birth.

2004: Pittsburgh Steelers - After week 1, the starting QB would be injured and in would come "unproven" rookie, Ben Rapelisberger. The team would go 15-1 and end up being eliminated by the Pats in the playoffs. However, the point is made, Big Ben had proven nothing prior to this season. He has never looked back.

2003: Kansas City Chiefs - After finishing last in the AFC west in 2002, the Chiefs soared to a division crown off the legs of "unproven" running back Priest Holmes and sparkplug "unproven" punt returner Dante Hall.

2003: Dallas Cowboys - After a few bad season, the Cowboys would go 10-6 with "unproven" QB, Quincy Carter.

2002: Cleveland Browns - After losing starter Tim Couch, in would come "unproven" quarterback Kelly Holcombe. Leading the Browns to a playoff birth and throwing for over 400 yards in their playoff loss to the Steelers

2002: New York Jets - After benching starter Vinny Testaverde, "unproven" quarterback Chad Pennington would lead the Jets to a playoff run.

2001: Greatest example ever - New England Patriots - After losing franchise quarterback Drew Bledsoe for the season with a ruptured sternum, in would come 199th overall selection, "unproven", rookie, almost undrafted Tom Brady. Along with until that point "unproven" head coach, Bill Bellicheck, the Patriots would go on to win their first superbowl in franchise history (yes it took them until 2002 to win a gdang superbowl! 42 years!

    - Do I need to go back any further? Is this enough proof that EVERY YEAR a team that EVERYBODY thinks will stink it out has an AMAZING season. EVERY YEAR!

None of these fanbases had any reason to be exited beforehand. None of them. There is an IF for you! IF HISTORY IS ANY EVIDENCE...THE BILLS AND LIONS WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR!

As I've stated before, I'd agree except the Bills have one MAJOR flaw and that is coaching. IMO, it's just too much to overcome...hopefully I'm wrong, but I've said that for the past 9 years and have been letdown each time.

how many of those teams had career losing coaches?

Arizona had a new coach improving year from year.
miami, ravens, atlanta....they all changed their coaches. The only team that took a step back but surprised people was Norv turner and the chargers. And you could throw in herm edwrads, but he seems to always get his team pumped despite not winnign much.

        Re: Defying Predictions

and let us not forget the 2003 version of the Chi Bears. Led by Tricky Dicky, they would go 13-3. There would even be a commercial made after the season of 2 bears fans supposedly talking about the Bears in the preseason and the quote was:

"I love my Bears, but we aren't winning 2 games this year"

Lets go for the ride! This is whats great about the NFL! Lets find a way to enjoy it! We haven't lost a game yet, and every year teams defy the odds. How can you argue with that?!??!?!?!?!

While last year was a great surprise, we still had to suffer years of Wanstache and a year of Cam Cameron before the orginization finally hired a FO that knows football.

2008: Arizona Cardinals - Ken Wisenhunt. Career Record: 17-15. Before this season was 8-8.

2008: Miami Dolphins - Tony Sparano: 11-5. Record before this season. 0-0. "Unproven"

2008: Baltimore Ravens - John Harbough: 11-5. Before this season: 0-0

2007: Cleveland Browns - Romeo Crennel: 24-40. Before this season: 10-22

2007: Jacksonville Jaguars - Jack Del Rio: 50-46. Before this season: 34-30

2006: San Diego Chargers - Marty Shottenheimer: 200-126 He obviously had a winning record but NEVER won playoff games.

2006: The Kansas City Chiefs - Herm Edwards. His record was 39-41 in NY. Losing record.

2006: THE CHICAGO BEARS - Lovie Smith was exactly .500 heading into this season with 11-5 his first year and 5-11 his second.

2006: New Orleans Saints - Sean Payton was 0-0 before this season.

2005: Cincinatti Bengals - Marvin Lewis was 16-16 in cinci before this season with his overall record currently at 46-49

2004: San Diego Chargers - Marty explained above

2004: Pittsburgh Steelers - Bill Cowher. Still he managed to have his team in the cellar the year before. Nobody expected the Steelers, who drafted Ben 11 overall, to be that good.

2003: Kansas City Chiefs - Dick Vermeil. He was 54-47 in Philly, 22-26 in STL (which reminds me, his record in STL before their 99 Superbowl season was 9-23.

2003: Dallas Cowboys - Bill Parcells. But regardless nobody was expecting much.

2002: Cleveland Browns - Butch Davis. Career record: 24-35. Record before this season was (gasp) 7-9.

2002: New York Jets - Herman Edwards again. Career record: 54-74

2001: Greatest example ever - Bill Belicheat. Record before this season: 41-52. Career losing record.

So...To answer your question. Out of the 17 teams who defied odds and made the playoffs despite predictions that they wouldnt, 6 were either completely inexperienced or right at .500. 5 of them had career losing records. And a few, although they had winning records before these named season, have losing career records today.

I agree that there is a suprise team, mostly every year. Only probelm is our conference is absolutley stacked. Every year it's the same teams, Pats, Steelers, Colts, Chargers, and then about 6-8 other teams that could vie for the wildcard birth. It's much more easier for a suprise team to come out of the NFC. Last year, the NFC had only one team (Giants), make the playoffs that made it the previous year. With the AFC, there is so much more consistancy.

Oh, and the 2007 Cleveland Browns didn't make the playoffs.

How many of these teams went 0-6 in their division the previous year and potentially lost ground during the offseason? And fired their OC the week before the season started? And so on....

If history is any evidence, we're ****ed.
