Hopefully he actually decides he wants to play everyday, game in, game out. Talented, but another soft player. It's too bad because I really had high hopes that this kid would be a leader when he first came here. Hopefully he takes the next step and doesn't get fat and happy because of the new deal.

So much for the article I just read in the Buffalo News.

2 years, $4 million total. ($1.5 million this year, $2.5 next year)

Stafford joined his teammates for Sunday's first full day of training camp after agreeing to a two-year contract worth $4 million. He will get $1.5 million this year, $2.5 million next year. The Sabres and their premier restricted free agent got close to a contract Friday, and Stafford participated in on-ice testing Saturday despite not having a deal.

Cheaper than I thought it would be.

It gives them another shot at him as a RFA.

that could lead to a messy hold out but I thought this made him an UFA...ok with me.

I'm happy that he's re-signed...but 2 years? Come on! :ill:

Supposedly he wanted 3 and the Sabres 4 (3 would have made him a UFA at the end of the deal). This is likely a compromise and he would not sign for 4.

Regardless, at least he is still restricted at the end of the deal and amount is really low, as in about 2/3rds of what I expected.

if he wanted 3 and the Sabres wanted 4, how the hell is 2 a compromise?

Because of the factor of being a UFA at the end of the deal.

He does not get that, but he does get arbitration rights at the end of this deal.

So he is still a RFA, but now can to an arbitrator in two years. And the Sabres can, at that time, try to lock him up for 4 or 5 years, taking him into his first couple of years of being an UFA.

Two year deal is good. Stafford is been very up and down during his career. I can fully see why the Sabres didn't want to make a longer commitment to the guy. Prove again for these next two years first.
