Dolphins would be wise to follow leader

Even if OLB Junior Seau doesn’t make a tackle this season, he already has had a positive impact on the Dolphins. Seau, a 12-time Pro Bowl selection with the Chargers, is the first player at the Dolphins’ facility in the morning and consistently stays late. He’s working out harder than anyone on the team. When rookies were in town and had extra meetings to learn the system, Seau joined them. And in practices, Seau shows more speed and agility than many of his teammates. If the Dolphins were looking for a leader, they found one. . . .

DAVIE -- As the Marlins' season goes adrift with silent bats, maybe they need to look to the Dolphins for a little bit of run-producing help. Maybe Ricky Williams could drive them out of their hitting woes.

Sitting inside a suite at Pro Player Stadium last week, the pristine diamond was in the background as Williams discussed social anxiety disorder. In the fall, he owns that field, but now it's more the Marlins' home than Dolphins'.

He may have left baseball in 1999 after he won the Heisman Trophy at Texas, but he has not forgotten the game....

kissin the ass of the fins... Got to love it.

the fins have one of the fastest front 7's in the league... seau hasn't been the fastest LB on the Chargers for two or three years now... I'll believe that crap about him being fast and agile when i see it on the field.

This big bad bowler need not announce his arrival. The long, sleek, black Caddy, etched with his signature and number 96, lets you know he's here. He's always here, it seems, at least three times a week, for hours at a time.

Let the other guys have golf as their primary means of offseason relaxation.

David Bowens is in the collision business, so it figures he would chill here. Chatting up the staff and senior citizens. Knocking down pins as if they were passers. Scoring turkeys instead of chasing them....

A slew of veteran acquisitions and nine draft picks have raised the level of competition among Dolphins players entering the 2003 season.

The recent departure of Mike Shula to Alabama has done the same for the team's coaching staff.

Rather than hire a new quarterbacks coach to take Shula's place, Dave Wannstedt will divide some of those responsibilities among his current staff to see which members are ready to advance beyond their current positions....

Usually when we do these interviews, we try and come up with a snappy lead, about how cool or accomplished our subject is. The idea is to familiarize the casual sports fan, in case they are unaware, for instance, of an outfielder's slugging percentage last year, or the number of tattoos on a defensive lineman's arm, or how a left winger really digs Metallica.

However, this is a man who needs no such introduction. His sporting legacy is enough. The holder of 25 National Football League records, he was the greatest pure passer to pick up a football, including most yards (61,361), touchdowns (420), completions (4,967), yards in a season (5,084) and touchdowns in a season (48). A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, he is one of the greatest players to wear a Pitt uniform, and will be a first-ballot inductee in Canton, Ohio. His name is mentioned in these parts with the same reverence as a folk hero and his physical gifts as if they came from the pages of Greek mythology.

And he sahnds just like yinz when he talks.

We caught up with him by phone last week, while he was in Monte Carlo for the Laureus International Sports Awards.

GIGS: So, how's retirement treating you?

DAN: Pretty good. I've been pretty busy, but this is the time of the year where you get to spend a little time hanging out and doing some fun stuff

On one side are three desperate men. On the other is one desperate team.

The Dolphins, who continue their offseason work today through Thursday with the second of four offseason quarterback schools, are searching for what they hope will be one man to solve a problem that has festered since the early days of the first Bush Administration.

The Dolphins have not returned a kickoff for a touchdown since Oct. 1, 1989, when Marc Logan did it at Houston. They have a total of three punt returns for touchdowns since that season, including one in the past nine seasons.

This offseason, the team has searched to change that. They signed return specialist Charlie Rogers to a one-year contract for the veteran minimum of $530,000.

DAVIE -- Terrell Buckley was back at home, standing at his old locker and talking about distant memories. His jersey might be a different number, but the colors look perfect.

Buckley, who went from No. 27 to No. 20, always felt connected to the Dolphins although he left for three seasons to play in Denver and New England. The veteran is thrilled to be back after signing a one-year deal this off-season.

"Actually I really never left as far as the team," said Buckley, who kept his house in Plantation after playing for the Dolphins from 1995-99. "The same guys are here for the most part. In the off-season I hang out with them and play golf. It just happened that we played each other twice a year. I was just not in the locker room and not in the same uniform. It doesn't feel any different."

New Orleans has emerged as an interested suitor for Dolphins weak-side linebacker Derrick Rodgers, an NFL source said Monday.

The Dolphins have spoken to New Orleans about a trade for Rodgers, who became expendable in mid-April after linebacker Junior Seau was acquired in a trade with San Diego. If unable to trade him for what likely will be low-round compensation, the Dolphins will wait until next Monday to release Rodgers so they can spread the remaining amount he counts against the salary cap over the next two seasons.

The Dolphins offered Rodgers and several high draft picks to New Orleans last month as part of an attempt to move into the middle of the first round. The Saints had interest in the Dolphins' proposal, but instead sent their two first-round picks to Arizona to choose Georgia defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan with the sixth overall selection.

Rodgers likely would have to agree to a restructured contract for a trade to occur. Rodgers could earn more than $2 million in 2003 through incentives, which deterred Green Bay from pursuing a trade after initial negotiations in April.

Strike another name from the roll call of potential June 1 salary cap casualties.

It took more than a month and likely dozens of phones calls, but the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday afternoon finally succeeded in trading linebacker Derrick Rodgers, dealing him to the New Orleans Saints for a seventh-round choice in the 2004 draft.

The trade continues an offseason makeover for the Saints defense, which could have as many as eight new starters in 2003, and removes from the Miami roster a veteran who had become extraneous after the acquisition of Junior Seau last month. Seau will replace Rodgers as the starting weakside linebacker and the Dolphins really did not want to carry a backup with such a lofty salary cap figure....

SAN FRANCISCO - Even in the midst of stardom, Ricky Williams felt isolated, shy and depressed.

It wasn't until Williams, the NFL's leading rusher last season with the Dolphins, was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder that he began to enjoy his success.

Williams, who spoke before the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting last week, hopes to help raise public awareness of mental illness by sharing his experience.

"I'm just trying to up the awareness and erase the stigma," Williams said...

DAVIE · Acquiring a 2004 seventh-round draft choice isn't the only reason the Dolphins traded linebacker Derrick Rodgers to New Orleans on Tuesday.

The Dolphins could have saved about $1 million against their 2003 salary cap by releasing Rodgers next Monday because of NFL rules allowing the team to split his remaining cap figure over the next two seasons. By trading him, the Dolphins cleared only $250,000 in cap room.

The decision, though, should help alleviate some of the negative perception surrounding the way Rodgers was handled during the offseason. A six-year starter, Rodgers agreed to restructure his contract for 2003 in February just before the start of the free-agent signing period.

While such a move usually guarantees a player's roster spot through the upcoming season, the Dolphins acquired 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker Junior Seau from San Diego via trade in April. Rodgers not only became expendable but his trade value was damaged because of what his restructured contract could have yielded.
