As the Jets begin the next phase of their offseason training program today, they also will take the first step in a matter of even more importance: negotiations with first-round draft pick Dewayne Robertson.

Hadley Engelhard, Robertson's agent, said he plans to talk by phone today with assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum. They've had general conversations in the past week but will now get down to specifics. If there's progress, a face-to-face meeting could take place before the end of the week.

Nothing less than swift progress is expected in negotiations with Robertson, a defensive tackle from Kentucky selected fourth overall.

The Jets will take the field today as a complete squad for the first time since their playoff loss to the Raiders in January, but their longest-tenured player - LB Mo Lewis - will be on the sideline as the team begins 11 days of on-the-field work. The 12-year veteran is recovering from arthroscopic hip surgery. The Jets expect him to be ready for training camp (July 21).
"He'll be ready for camp, no question," GM Terry Bradway said yesterday. "As far as now, it's not really necessary for him to be out there. It's more important to see guys like Jason Glenn and (rookie) Victor Hobson gets the practice reps."

May 30th--Evans denies smoking pot, will appeal test results

NEW YORK -- Defensive tackle Josh Evans worked out with the New York Jets on Friday but refused to talk about a report that he tested positive for marijuana and could face an indefinite suspension from the NFL.

Evans was among 80 players on the practice field at the Jets training camp at Hofstra University, participating in offseason team activity.

The New York Times said three persons familiar with his situation confirmed the positive test and said Evans has appealed the finding with the league. He won a similar appeal last year.

"I did not use or smoke marijuana," Evans told The Times on Thursday night. "I didn't smoke. I didn't use marijuana in no type of way."

The NFL and the Jets declined to comment on Evans' situation, citing confidentiality issues. Evans also wouldn't talk as he left the field.

Evans was suspended twice by the league for violating its substance-abuse policy during six seasons he spent with the Tennessee Titans. He missed the first four games in 1999 and was suspended for all of the 2000 season.
